Summary/Abstract: The birth, development and disappearance of the Romanian Maritime Service represents a page of authentic history from the glorious past of the Romanian Navy. The creation of the Romanian Maritime Service, the work of the visionary Gheorghe Manu, who in 1890, had established the Romanian River Navigation as well as the need to establish a national maritime institution was strongly felt after the union of Dobrogea with Romania in 1877. Dobrogea brought to Romania 245 km of maritime coast, not controlled by the European Commission of the Danube, as it happened with the navigation at the mouth of the river. Through the Trans-Danubian province, independent Romania opened a gateway to the world’s seas and the planet’s ocean, with opportunities that the Romania state had to capitalize on through an active presence in world shipping.
