Cartographic and Bibliographic Elements on Historical Cyprus Maps

Summary/Abstract: With its location at crossroads of maritime trade routes in Mediterranean, Cyprus island has been the subject of many historical maps. The human and economic structure, history, developing building and political situation of the island are reflected on maps. From these maps, the changes, periodical names, human and administrative characteristics of the cities and settlements in Cyprus over time are also determined. In the study, the identification information (year of production, cartographer, manuscript, place of publication, etc.) of selected maps which made in a 1000-year period and the relevant bibliographies were given in detail. It was tried to establish a relationship between the administrative structure and settlement, especially with explanations through the settlement names. The relevant information on maps, and especially the nomenclature, is valuable in terms of Cyprus history and reference. Although many geographical nomenclatures appear to be similar to current names, it is understood that primarily Latin names, have changed over time or become different due to disuse. It is seen that some place names are translated into Turkish depending on the pronunciation of the name, while some names have synonyms Turkish equivalents. Historical maps are documents as a part of the Turkish presence, history and cultural accumulation in Cyprus; Contribution to Cyprus studies can be made by studying the documents and interpreting the information obtained
