Summary/Abstract: This research aims at retrieving and classifying a range of Spanish and Romanian idioms with proper nouns. By means of both monolingual and bilingual lexicographical sources, we shall present the main mechanisms of motivation and formation of such idioms. We posit that the cases of similarity are due to the existence of a shared motivation in both languages (idioms with religion-based proper nouns, such as Dios me libre/ferească Dumnezeu or those alluding to antique myths, such as el talón de Aquiles/călcâiul lui Ahile), while the cases of divergence are based on regional mythology (e.g. ser más feo que Picio, de pe vremea lui Pazvante) or on historical reasons (poner una pica en Flandes, țara lui Papură-Vodă).
