Summary/Abstract: In this article, we aim to explore the scopes and limits of the use of the pre-trained generative transformer ChatGPT 3.5 in the field of terminology, a subject of interest among terminologists and which has emerged during 2023 in several conference papers that are currently under publication (Varela Salinas& Lorenzatto, 2023; Kouraichi, 2023 and Heinisch, 2023). Our initial hypothesis is that, if chatbots are used for machine translation and specialized translation (Larroyed 2023: 1009-1017) of texts with significant terminology density, such programs can, at a certain level, manage terminology. Based on this research hypothesis, a questionnaire has been developed in order to analyze which are the terminological data that ChatGPT uses for the questions related to terminology and how it manages the information available in two different languages: Spanish and Romanian. Furthermore, through the present research we want to observe “what ChatGPT knows” and “what ChatGPT can do” in the field of terminology research. We believe that the set of 10 theoretical and practical questions related to punctual and systematic terminology will highlight the scopes and limits of ChatGPT 3.5. Furthermore, addressing the same set of questions in RO and ES will allow us to observe whether there are differences between the linguistic training of the system in both languages and what is their nature.
