Summary/Abstract: In recent years, the discourse surrounding the polarization and brutalization of public debate has intensified, with phenomena such as „cancel culture” emerging as emblematic of these shifts. This paper interrogates the quasi-historical narrative that posits a declension from a purportedly more civil past to a contentious present, challenging the notion that earlier public discourse was inherently more constructive. By incorporating sociological and cultural studies perspectives, this analysis explores whether the idealization of past public debates obscures a more complex reality.
