Summary/Abstract: This article presents an analytical survey of the stages of development of French philology in Bulgaria, starting with the establishment of the first department of foreign language philology in Bulgaria in 1923 and tracing its development to the present day. The stages are linked to the work of three Bulgarian researchers in French, its literature and its culture (the professors Toma S. Tomov, Bozhil Nikolov and Krasimir Manchev), who served as heads of department during three consecutive periods. The trends in French philology characterizing university courses and research during the mandates of their successors are also outlined, and attention is paid to international cooperation. The specificity of the Sofia department is outlined in relation to a typology of university departments throughout Europe. Some prospects for its development in the future are also highlighted.
