Summary/Abstract: The paper presents empirical data about the relationship between emotional reactivity, emotional regulation, rational and experiential processing styles and individual differences in narrative transportability or engageability (the tendency to get immersed in stories – oral storytelling, books, movies, etc.). Two methods for measuring transportability (engageability) are used and adapted for the purposes of this study: The Narrative Engageability Scale (Bilandzic et al., 2019), with four subscales (suspense/curiosity propensity, emotional engageability, ease of accepting unrealism and presence propensity) and The Transportability Scale (Dal Cin et al., 2004). The research methods also include Rational-Experiential Inventory (Norris & Epstein, 2011), Perth Emotional Reactivity Scale (Beccera et al., 2017) and Perth Emotion Regulation Competency Inventory, (Preece et al., 2018). The empirical research has been conducted online, February-March 2023 (N = 272). Findings show that women are more likely to be transported/engaged in narrative in comparison to men. With age the narrative transportability (engageability) decreases. Emotional reactivity and experiential processing style correlate with higher transportability (engageability). The interpretation of findings is made according to The Cognitive-Experiential Theory (Epstein, 2014), The Transportation Theory (Gerrig, 1993), The Transportation-Imagery Model of Narrative Persuasion (Green & Brock, 2002) and The Narrative Comprehension and Engagement Model (Busselle & Bilandzic, 2008).
