Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we propose a reconstruction of the prototype angiosperms based on archaic characters that are scattered across a number of taxa. It is shown that the hypothetical ancestor was unbranched, had heart-shaped leaves with pinnate-dichotomous venation, folded in infancy, and grew under shaded conditions. A number of problems of morphology and theoretical nomenclature are considered as a reflection of these problems.
