Summary/Abstract: Logicians, philosophers, psychologists, sociologists and linguists have long been interestedin research on the meaning of words, sentences, and texts. Although evidence shows thatmeaning influenced the foundations of grammar and determines language developmentand successful communication, no universally recognised methods of describing it have sofar been developed. In speech therapy, however, meaning is taken into account in studieson naming and understanding words and sentences. The article presents the achievementsof contemporary cognitive semantics as well as methods proposed in structuralist andcognitive linguistics for investigating and recording word meanings. The study proposeshow to use certain methods of description in diagnostic and therapeutic proceduresin speech therapy: from the sensory-motor stage of forming knowledge about a wordmeaning to the stage of understanding a word as a linguistic sign embedded in a linguisticsystem. Moreover, it is emphasised that research on the semantic development of wordsand its constraints in speech disorders and language development is of paramount value.
