Summary/Abstract: Over the years, there have appeared numerous studies concerning the language of radioutterances. However, the phonic layer of such utterances has been analyzed much lessfrequently, and studies of the prosody of utterances in Polish radio stations have so farbeen rather rare. The article analyses only one element of a selected genre of journalisticutterances on the radio, that is the speech rate of radio news bulletins. This rate can bemeasured and compared to the data on the topic provided in studies on the productionand reception of utterances published in the field of linguistics (especially phoneticsand media linguistics) and speech therapy (mainly media speech therapy). Conductingresearch on speech rate using sound analysis programmes is important both due to the complete lack of such analyses and the acceleration of speech rate in the media, includingthe radio, over the years, which is noted in many studies. It is worth assessing thesemeasurements also as regards listeners’ perceptual skills in understanding texts spokenor read at a particular pace. Moreover, the speech rate in news programmes read on theradio, which represent the official level of Polish, should come with correctness and clarityof speaking. Media speech therapists can be of help in achieving or maintaining such skills.
