Summary/Abstract: The socketed axe recently discovered at Gornăcel (Gorj County), in a high area with a good visibility over the Jiu Valley, was subjected to investigations by the X-ray fluorescence and imaging methods in order to determine the metal composition and to obtain relevant details of technological nature. The artefact was made of bronze with a high level of tin. The examination of the artefact by X-ray computed tomography revealed the areas with increased porosity and allowed for the exact determination of the shape and size of the socket. Socketed axes similar in shape and decoration to the one from Gornăcel were found in eastern Serbia and southwestern Romania, but also in southeastern Romania. The artefact from Gornăcel was dated to the Ha A2/B1 period
