Summary/Abstract: Under Polish law, the local government in its area is the owner of the vast majority of resources that constitute important elements of cultural heritage, or has decision‑making powers with respect to them. The way in which local cultural heritage is used depends to a large extent on the strategies local governments adopt and the courses of action chosen. The aim of this study is to determine their role in activities aimed at using cultural heritage in the tourist development of a town, using the example of Bochnia the oldest in Małopolska. The following methods were used to achieve the objective: analysis of known data, library search, an analysis of the tourist offers at the Bochnia Salt Mine, the websites of entities related to cultural and tourist activities in the town, and field research involving verification of the current status of projects undertaken. It was established that for local government, cultural heritage is an important element of the functioning of a town, which is reflected in the provisions of the strategic and planning documents in force. The town makes use of its heritage, first and foremost in the creation of urban space, but also by undertaking cooperation with other entities providing tourism services based on local heritage.
