Summary/Abstract: Jan Zachariasiewicz’s output comprises about sixty books which were written and published during almost half a century: from his debut 1854 novel Gwiazda to Zakopane skarby from 1897. The aim of this paper is an examination from a literary studies perspective of several selected creations of characters of those works inspired by ideas present in the world of culture and politics in the 19th century. The characters in Zachariasiewicz’s major novels are an artistic mirror reflecting also the author’s biography, his interests and his manner of existence in the world. As a result of the analyses provided, the readers see the writer not only as an important link in the development of 19th-century prose but also as an author engaging in meditation on issues important even today.
