Summary/Abstract: Th is article focuses on intercultural competencies, which can be identifi ed during reading comprehension activities and in the subsequent process of speaking on a given topic, as a part of second-languagelearning. During the process of interpreting a text in a foreign language, attention is focused on cognitive andaff ective competencies, in particular the student’s ability to fi nd and characterize the emotional aspect of thestatement. Storytelling (re-telling of material) used in the teaching of a foreign language demonstrates thatboth cognitive and aff ective components are an essential part of intercultural competence in language education, because they strengthen grammatical and stylistic abilities as well as the ability to think critically andto choose appropriate language tools in specifi c situations, i.e. ‘cultured’ and ‘culturally correct’ speech. Th e useof literary texts from diff erent historical periods, including contemporary literature, plays an extremely important role in language education and cultural transfer.
