Summary/Abstract: Regarding the 1609 Diploma of Gabriel Báthory, which granted Romanian priests exemption from serfdom duties and ensured their freedom of movement with the consent of the Metropolitan of Alba Iulia, historiography has typically addressed it from an ecclesiastical perspective. However, this study seeks to interpret the Diploma from a political standpoint, specifically within the context of Gabriel Báthory’s internal policies. Building on Ildikó Horn’s observation that the prince had a governance strategy beyond the apparent chaos and arbitrariness—especially in the first two years of his reign—the issuance of the Diploma aligns with the broader context and logic of his rule.
