Summary/Abstract: Amid the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, the debate over banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) remains a critical issue. Reports of collaboration by the church’s clergy and conflicts over their eviction from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra have intensified the situation. Despite the Ukrainian government’s fluctuating stance, the church’s significant influence persists, with nearly 8,097 communities as of May 2024. However, public trust in the church has plummeted, with only 12% viewing it positively. The church’s involvement in political processes and its alignment with Russian ideological narratives further complicate the matter. The need for effective legislation to address the church’s role in national security is evident, yet progress has been slow. The church’s deep-rooted influence in Ukrainian society and politics underscores the complexity of resolving this issue.
