Family in the Sacred Art of the City of Bieruń – Case Studies

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study will be to examine two works from the early 21st century and to deter-mine the layers of meaning and symbolism. Their author is the painter Roman Nyga. Theyare located in Bieruń. The first is a painting entitled The Holy Family placed in the parishchurch of St. Bartholomew the Apostle. The work symbolically conveys, among others, thebeauty of love, community, faith. We can also encounter these issues in the square of theso-called St. Valentine’s Square. In its center there is a column – the Monument of St. Val-entine, Patron Saint of the City of Bieruń. The main access to the central point of the squareis flanked by two low plinths, on both sides of which there are granite slabs with drawingsand inscriptions: LOVE – PURITY, LET’S DO GOOD, FAITH – PRAYER, GRACE –MIRACLE. The research method adopted in this study combines the analysis of sacred artwith a local historical background and a broader cultural perspective. The aim of the studyis to isolate symbols and signs encoded in the works discussed and which co-determine theiruniqueness in which the beauty of art conveys the beauty of deep faith and prayer
