Summary/Abstract: This article examines the works of two prominent authors from their respective literatures: Abel Sánchez by Miguel de Unamuno and The Living Sphinx (Sfinga e gjallë) by Rexhep Qosja. Both works engage in a literary reappropriation of the biblical myth of fratricide, contextualizing and actualizing it within their own societies and cultures. Unamuno transposes the myth from the familial to the societal sphere, crafting a model of friendship poisoned by jealousy. In contrast, Qosja reimagines the myth to confront the phenomenon of fratricidal violence in Kosovo, particularly as a means to highlight the existential threats faced by Albanian intellectuals. Both authors undertake a resemanticization of the myth, producing unique works that resonate with their cultural and literary milieus: Unamuno’s psychological modernist novella in Spanish literature, and Qosja’s postmodern drama in Albanian literature.
