Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to examine the instrumentalization of religion for its use to achieve political ends, including the organization of religio-politically motivated violence, also known as 'terrorism'. The significance of the problem is determined by the actual development of religious rivalry. In 1968 no international terrorist group could be classified as non-secular, in 1980 2 out of 64 groups could be classified as non-secular, 1992 11 out of 48 terrorist groups were religious 1994 16 out of 49 terrorist groups were religious, 1995 25 of 58 active groups in international terrorist organizations were primarily religious in character or motivation. The increase in religio-politically motivated violence is more than obvious. Today, religious and ethnic antagonism and sectarian violence cover territories comparable to the scope of world wars. Inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations are extremely dynamic. There are no final solutions. There are no givens that cannot be changed. They were and are a fertile field for political adventurers, revolutionary vanguards and special services of various kinds.
