Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the political position of the president in Armenia and his role in the political system. It discusses the formation of Armenian statehood after the collapse of the USSR and Armenia’s proclamation of independence. The complex reality of Armenia in the first half of the 1990s is shown. During this period, the state president had very broad powers and dominated the political system. The purpose of the study is to analyse the powers of the president in the 1995 Constitution, as amended in 2005 and 2015. It is indicated to what extent the constitutional amendments have affected the actual position of the head of state and whether they have made real changes in the functioning of the main organs of state. As a result of them, since 2018, the president has been playing a symbolic-representational role, and his previous role was effectively taken over by the prime minister.
