THE ICON IN THE NEW CONTEMPORARY ERA

Summary/Abstract: The icon has a long history and a specific iconography that has been preserved over the centuries until today. The icon is an integral part of Orthodox worship. In general, its iconography has been preserved as a stable tendency, however, certain changes are taking place nowadays. It retains its outward appearance in most general terms, and yet the materials from which it is created are begining to become perishable; the splendor of the temple no longer includes the permanence of the beautification as an essential goal. New subjects are being introduced, the colours used are subject of changing, old durable materials are changed with new, different and typical of nowadays. Not infrequently the icon is mixed up with the religious picture. Whether the sacred image of the icon will be preserved depends on the attitude and perception of modern man and the reaction of the contemporary iconographer.
