Summary/Abstract: The multi-layered and complex nature of cultural assets, the richness of cultural diversity, tangible and intangible, is of particular importance to each individual as well as to the wider social community. Written heritage is an irreplaceable part of cultural heritage. It is the foundation of Croatian culture and proof of an awareness of belonging to a unique Croatian national unity throughout history. It preserves within itself the remnants of past worldviews and traces of contact with other cultures and represents the pillar of every culture, i.e. cultural identity. This paper examines the language recorded in Duje Balavac. It was the first humorous-satirical newspaper from Split, socially and politically engaged, serving both as entertainment and sharp criticism of certain social phenomena. The newspaper was published in two stages: from 1908 to 1912 and later again in 1922 and 1923. The name associated with it is Ante Katunarić, the editor-in-chief and publisher of the newspaper. All journal issues of Duje Balavac were downloaded from the website http://www. gkmm.hr/duje_balavac.htm and analysed for this study. The paper focuses on phonological and morphological linguistic features, namely the preservation and promotion of the local dialect of Split, i.e. the preservation of the written heritage of Split.
