Doctor Dubrovin: New Facts of Biography and Assessment of Contemporaries

Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to unknown and little-known facts of the biography of A.I. Dubrovin, the founder and first head of the largest Black Hundred organization of the Russian Empire, the Union of the Russian People, and subsequently the creator and leader of the first political party in Russian history, named after its leader — the All-Russian Dubrovinsky Union of the Russian People. New information is being introduced into scientific circulation concerning the origin, birth, education and service of Dubrovin; Previously unknown facts from his medical practice and public activities, which he conducted before the beginning of his political career, are given. Attention is drawn to the inaccuracies and errors made by researchers of Dubrovin’s biography, on the basis of archival documents and materials of the pre-revolutionary periodical press, clarifications are made to the ideas established in historical science about the leader of the black hundred. The article also collects and systematizes the testimonies of contemporaries about Dubrovin, which provide valuable material for understanding this ambiguous political figure. A number of characteristics given to the leader of the Union of the Russian People by his contemporaries (statesmen and politicians, publicists and journalists, cultural figures) are given in this publication for the first time. It is noted that despite the contradictory reviews about Dubrovin and the presence of opposite assessments of the personal qualities and activities of the politician in them, there is also a common thing in them that allows them to form a complete image of the leader of the right-wing Russian monarchists. The new information provided in the article significantly enriches the previously existing ideas about Dubrovin, allows us to partially revise the stereotypes and ideas about this famous politician that have been established in historical science, and provides valuable material for further study of his biography.
