Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on Jovan Gavrilovic, a Serb from the Habsburg Monarchy, and his influence on the development of the Serbian language, the political-legislative-legal way of thinking and the economy of Serbia in the 19th century. The study of the life and work of Jovan Gavrilovic is interesting due to his foreign origins, his reasons for coming to Serbia and his rise to become one of the most prominent and most respected figures of the old Serbian society. The study ofGavrilovic’s life and work enables us to see the huge influence of the Serbian intellectuals living abroad on the creation of the Serbian state, and their direct participation in its creation and development. This paper aims to contribute to revealing the degree of Gavrilovic’s contribution to the adoption of the 1869 Constitution. As a person in charge of the Duke’s security, upbringing and education, as well as that of the court staff, Gavrilovic oversaw his teachers and thus influenced Duke Milan’s Austrian consciousness and awareness, which could have been reflected in firmer political, legal and economic links of Serbia with the Habsburg Monarchy.
