Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to present the role railway transport plays in European Union and in Romania. The importance of this mode of transport is shortly put to the reader forefronts, while at the same time there is presented its share in land transport market. Road transport has its advantages, but its market share cannot be motivated only by market considerations; there are other factors which put this type of transport on a predominant position. The advantages of rail transport are presented face-to-face with road transport especially for passengers’ transport, how railway transport can gain a greater share in land transport market, and how it can contribute to create the conditions of a more sustainable future.
