Summary/Abstract: This text examines the main characteristics of the Gortynian Laws – considered the first attempt at codification in Europe of a normative act, dating back to the 5th century BC. Here they are presented, both in their essence as an epigraphic monument, and in the light of the analysis of the legal norms contained in them. The historical and socio-economic conditions that led to the creation of the legal norms incorporated into the laws, as well as some specific features of the society in Gortyna, which had an impact on the substantive legal norms and judicial proceedings, have been studied.
