The paper is devoted to the Prague Jewish scholar of the Enlightenment period, Peter Beer (1758-1838), who was one of the representatives of the radical wing of the Prague Haskalah. The introductory part of the paper quoting his autobiography surveys Beer’s life and work. Attention is also paid to his relation to Moshe ben Maimon’s works and his interpretation of Maimonides’ philosophy, then there is a passage dealing with Beer’s conception of “pure Mosaism“ and his interpretation of Judaism from the position of Enlightenment, and finally there is a survey of sources drawn on by Peter Beer.

The study aims to employ visual semiotics to analyse the ritual graphic signs – both sacred and secular – present in the Rēzekne Jewish cemetery, treating it as an integral part of the city and examining its “signifier” and “signified”. The Star of David, serving as the primary symbol within the ritual graphics, is observed to gradually lose its status as a purely sacred symbol and, on certain tombstones, confirms the structure of a symptom, conveying a reminiscence or simple message. The paper seeks to elucidate not only the cultural and social factors contributing to these changes but also to the mechanisms underlying the mutual transitions between symbols and symptoms, along with the differences in the coding of these types of signs. Ritual graphics is an important indicator of the regularity of cultural processes within ethnically diverse environments. A survey of Jewish cemeteries in the Latgale region highlights clear distinctions in the choice of visual graphics between urban and rural settings. Furthermore, alongside verbal accounts of the deceased, ritual graphics, on the one hand, complement these narratives as integral components, while, on the other hand, maintain an independent existence. This is because, for observers, the primary and sometimes sole point of contact (particularly for those unfamiliar with Hebrew and Yiddish) is the visual or non-verbal sign. The study emphasises the divergence between the sacred symbolism of the hexagram and the secular interpretation of the yellow star or “badge”, exploring the causal relationships underlying their usage and perception from the point of view of visual semiotics and cultural philosophy, specifically examining phenomena of symbolization and desymbolization.

Wrocław Jewish studies after the World War II

The article traces the development of academic Jewish studies in Wrocław from their modest beginnings after the Holocaust, through a renaissance of academic interests in the 1980s, and culminating in the creation of the Department of Jewish Studies at the University of Wrocław. As we demonstrate, the main areas of scholarly interest among the faculty members of the Department are the history of Hasidism, modern Yiddish culture, and the socio-political history of Polish Jews in the 20th century, which, as we argue, closely correspond with major methodological and cultural developments in global humanities.

Giulio Ricciarelli) oraz Murer: Anatomia procesu ( Murer: Anatomie des Prozesses, 2018, reż. Christian Frosch). Podstawowym celem badawczym jest tu wskazanie strategii, z jakich korzystają twórcy tych dzieł w procesie kodowania żydowskości. Refleksji poddane zostają także motywy i role przypisywane żydowskim postaciom. Materiał badawczy stanowią współczesne produkcjez Austrii oraz Niemiec. Komparatystyczna analiza umożliwia podjęcie refleksji nad tym, na ile odmienna polityka pamięci i przebieg rozliczeń z nazistowską przeszłości wpływają na filmowe wizerunki Żydów.

Visualizing Pentateuchal Composition: A New View of the Creation of Ancient Hebrew Literature

This article describes a gap in scholarship on the Hebrew Bible, and demonstrates a way to address it via a digital humanities project that is at once a research tool and an interactive work of public scholarship. The gap results from the fact, well-known among scholars but still startling to much of the public, that ancient Israel had no Bible as we know it. This is the case for the Persian and Hellenistic period, when, as we know largely from the evidence of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the textual form of many biblical books and the biblical canon as a unit was not yet fixed. But it is also true in a different way for an earlier period in the history of the Pentateuch, before the texts were edited into their current form. With this consensus as a starting point, we present the opportunity to visualize the most widely-agreed on possible sources and layers of the Pentateuch separately, offering a glimpse of texts closer to what people in ancient Israel may have actually had, and letting readers experiment with how they may have been combined.

Layers of Abjection: The Unnamed Pilegesh of Judges 19 and Us

The unnamed pilegesh of Judges 19 has been understood and labeled as “abject.” However, to only see her as abject as it pertains to the text is to miss the layered aspects of her abjection. She is not only abject literally and literarily but also abject as she is a symbol of abjection for the social body of Ancient Judah, a figure by which they understand and make sense of their traumas. The dismembered pilegesh thus demonstrates how corporeal violence to her body is used to think within the ancient world, how her body continues to demonstrate the subjugation of precarious bodies, and the way her body demonstrates theological claims and ideas—on multiple layers. Finally, in a manner of self-reflexivity, this article considers my posture as continuing her abjection. While this will not and cannot redress her abjection, exposing these layers is an attempt at re-membering.

David Flusser und seine Bedeutung für den jüdisch-christlichen Dialog

The life story of David Flusser (1917 Vienna – 2000 Jerusalem) extends from interwar Czechoslovakia, where he grew up and studied, to the broad research and teaching activities of an erudite professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He was a leading authority on Second Temple Judaism as well as early Christian writings. His contribution to the Jewish-Christian dialogue lies above all in his deep understanding of early Christianity, which he approached with great interest, openness and friendliness. For him, both Jesus and the apostle Paul are inspirational personalities who can only be properly understood in the context of the Jewish tradition of the time. The presented article focuses on how Flusser perceives their relationship to Jewish law (Torah) and how he sees Jewish attitudes to Jesus’ crucifixion.

An Unknown Hebrew Deliverance Narrative from 1772: The Story of Joseph Isaac Poppers՚ Illness and Recovery

MS New York, Columbia University Libraries, General 261, contains a short narrative, which recounts the illness and recovery in February 1771 of a Jewish trader from Prague named Isaac Poppers, known from other sources. The text, titled Divre ha-yamim me-ish holekh tamim [The chronicles of a man who walketh uprightly] is a deliverance story, which exhibits a number of similarities to so-called family scrolls. The narrative mentions various rituals and liturgies that Poppers’ wife arranged to be performed in Vienna, where her husband was taken ill, and in their home city of Prague, where Rabbi Ezekiel Landau (1713– 1793) was instrumental in organizing the rituals. The article interprets illness and medical therapy in the Divre ha-yamim through a comparison with another story of healing found in the roughly contemporary Shivhe ha-Besht, the wellknown collection of Hasidic tales. A parallel reading of both texts sheds light on the importance of non-physical cause of Poppers’ illness and the ensuing necessity of ritual “repairing” (tikkun) of his non-physical ailments, which was a pre-condition for the efficacy of medical treatment of the physical disease. In contrast to other deliverance stories, in this case the memorial day was not established by the main male protagonist but by Poppers՚ wife Frumet. It represented a periodic culmination of ongoing penitential practices, prescribed for Poppers. The manuscript was completed on 29 January 1772, shortly before the first anniversary of Poppers՚ recovery. Poppers died in September 1777 and his memorial day was most likely discontinued. The article is followed by a complete edition of the Hebrew text, which contains a Yiddish-Hebrew postscript.

Elements of Language Contact between German and Yiddish in the Jewish Press of Interwar Bukovina

Following the integration of Bukovina into the Habsburg Empire in 1775, the Jews began to settle in this region in increasing numbers. By the end of the nineteenth century, many of those Jews became German speakers, while another significant part remained speakers of Yiddish. Due to the use of both languages among the Jews of Bukovina, there are many recorded instances of mutual influences between Yiddish and German. These mutual influences, through language contact, were most evident in the first half of the twentieth century. The most relevant medium in which these language transfers were recorded is the Jewish press of Bukovina, in German and Yiddish. A comparative study of these Jewish periodicals may illustrate how, on the one hand, the language contact between German and Yiddish generated a particular semantic abundance, while on the other hand it contributed to the remarkable cultural diversity and complexity of interwar Bukovina.

Conflicting Discourses in Jewish-Romanian Interwar Literature and Its Reception

Jewish Cultural Heritage in Oradea: Assessing Place Recovery and Tourism Development in a Multicultural City

The paper discusses some of the issues related to the involvement and participation of the local public administration and Jewish community in the management and promotion of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Oradea. The purpose of our research was to assess the Jewish cultural heritage in relation to the cohabiting population, the local public administration and various organizations and associations from the public and the private sectors, and also the perspective from the small but still dynamic Jewish community, using focus group research analysis. The relationship between culture, heritage, identity and diversity, multiculturalism and interculturality, local community and tourism development is also presented, since Oradea is famous for its long and fruitful coexistence of many cultural, ethnic and religious minorities. The results of the survey revealed that the Jewish cultural heritage is positively appreciated by the local public community, being assigned a various range of cultural values, illustrating some place recovery practices. It also suggests development proposals that can contribute to a revaluation of assets.

Wodzu nasz, Piłsudski! Postać Marszałka w polskojęzycznej prasie żydowskiej okresu międzywojennego

W okresie międzywojennym w języku polskim ukazywało się około 200 czasopism żydowskich. W prasie tej jednak Polsce i Polakom poświęcano niewiele uwagi. Piłsudski był jednym z niewielu Polaków, o których czytelnicy prasy mogli dowiedzieć się czegoś więcej. Biorąc pod uwagę różnorodność nurtów politycznych reprezentowanych przez te czasopisma, ich stosunek do Polaków, innych odbiorców, odmienne postrzeganie rzeczywistości politycznej i częste wzajemne animozje, reprezentacja Piłsudskiego może być jednym ze stosunkowo niewielu spójnych aspektów dla całej prasy żydowskiej wydawanej w języku polskim. Oczywiste jest, że po 1926 roku artykuły o Piłsudskim musiały się ukazywać, ale obowiązek nie był jedynym powodem pisania o nim; obok tekstów banalnych i zdawkowych zdarzały się też teksty głęboko emocjonalne i znacznie przekraczające niezbędne minimum. Dla żydowskich czasopism Piłsudski był niekwestionowanym i jedynym twórcą niepodległości w Polsce, a czasem nawet w całej Europie, który uchronił przed bolszewicką nawałą. Był też przywódcą, obrońcą Żydów, choć nie dość zaangażowanym, a dla syjonistów wzorem do naśladowania dla tych, którzy chcą odbudować państwo żydowskie. Jednak kult Piłsudskiego w czasopismach żydowskich miał konkretne cele polityczne. W pierwszych latach niepodległości był formą ataku na Narodową Demokrację, w okresie rządów sanacji podkreślał, że zgodnie z koncepcją Marszałka wszyscy obywatele państwa mają równe prawa, po 1935 roku służył uzasadnieniu, że obóz pomajowy dyskryminując Żydów, zdradza jego ideały.

Kokebe, Czutyk, dos Gesl i inne. Żydowskie toponimy Lublina

Artykuł analizuje przedwojenne toponimy miasta Lublina w języku jidysz, ich rodzaje, znaczenie i etymologię. Chociaż polscy Żydzi używali unikalnych wspólnych nazw jidysz dla ulic i miejsc w miastach, w których mieszkali, poszukiwanie takich nazw jest często utrudnione ze względu na brak istotnych źródeł. Jednak w przypadku Lublina dwa ważne artykuły na temat toponimów jidysz, autorstwa miejscowych badaczy żydowskich – Josefa Hernhuta i Jakowa Kojfmana, ukazały się w jidyszowym czasopiśmie „Jidysz far ale” (Jidysz dla wszystkich) na krótko przed wybuchem II wojny światowej. Artykuł uzupełnia typologię Hernhuta i Kojfmana o badania oparte na ustaleniach lubelskiej prasy jidysz, przekazach ustnych i innych pomniejszych źródłach.

Filozofia Emmanuela Lévinasa jako odpowiedź na doświadczenie Zagłady

Przedstawiciele różnych współczesnych ruchów filozoficznych próbowali uporać się z traumą spowodowaną Holokaustem i ludobójstwem. Holokaust odcisnął bardzo wyraźny ślad na filozofach pochodzenia żydowskiego. Najwybitniejszym nurtem współczesnej myśli żydowskiej jest klasyczna filozofia dialogu. Artykuł przedstawia krytyczną analizę wpływu doświadczenia Holokaustu na myśl Emanuela Lévinasa, głównego powojennego przedstawiciela filozofii dialogu. Lévinas, więziony jako oficer armii francuskiej, wojnę spędził w obozie jenieckim. Większość jego prac, powstałych po wojnie, naznaczona została bolesnym cieniem Holokaustu (pomimo nielicznych bezpośrednich i osobistych odniesień do doświadczeń wojennych). W swojej myśli etycznej Levinas szukał odpowiedzi na dwa fundamentalne pytania: 1) jak mogło dojść do zbrodni ludobójstwa i 2) jak zmienić schematy myślenia i świadomość jednostek, aby podobna tragedia nigdy więcej się nie powtórzyła. Wyraził, że koncepcja relacji międzyludzkich jest doskonałą praktyczną lekcją dla każdego z nas. Popularyzacja jego idei jest nadal aktualna. Jego refleksje nie straciły nic ze swojej aktualności w erze wszechobecnej „mowy nienawiści” zalewającej media masowe i społecznościowe.

The Silence of Judaica

"The National Library of Poland holds a vast collection of Yiddish prints, both pre and post-war, issued mainly in contemporary and former territories of Poland. Thanks to the effort of the Library and years of digitizing the material, about 25 thousand Yiddish newspaper issues, hundreds of books, posters and leaflets were published online and made available for free at the Library’s digital library polona.pl. Although the researcher’s dream has not yet been fulfilled and the Yiddish OCR system has not yet been implemented in polona.pl, Yiddish scholars in Poland received a powerful and user-friendly research tool. Furthermore, by publishing scans of newspapers from big cities and smaller towns, polona.pl has revealed a forgotten or suppressed multi-linguistic and social landscape of pre-war Poland. Even if some Poles living in, for instance, present day town of Chełm knew about their town’s rich Jewish history and its importance in Jewish folklore already ten or so years ago, the image was surely vague. Today, by a single click, one can literally immerse oneself into the world of pre-war Polish-Jewish reality of a small town and – even withoutunderstanding Yiddish, but simply by browsing the papers and reading Polish fragments appearing there from time to time – find out that it was more complex than one might think [...]".

Początki społeczności żydowskiej w Strzelnie (1772/1773–1815)

Na Kujawach ludność żydowska zaczęła się osiedlać już w początku XV wieku, najpierw przede wszystkim w miastach królewskich, aby następnie licznie zamieszkać miasta prywatne. W ośrodkach dóbr kościelnych zazwyczaj w ogóle nie dopuszczano do osiedlania się Żydów. Do tej grupy zaliczało się również Strzelno, będące własnością tamtejszego klasztoru norbertanek. Sytuacja ta zmieniła się dopiero po 1772 roku, gdy w wyniku pierwszego rozbioru Polski miasto znalazło się pod zaborem pruskim. Pomimo początkowo nieprzyjaznego dla Żydów ustawodawstwa, za panowania Fryderyka II zaledwie tolerowanych, ta grupa ludności dość chętnie zaczęła napływać do miast, które dotychczas były dla niej zamknięte. Pierwsza informacja źródłowa o Żydach zamieszkujących Strzelno pochodzi z lat 1779–1780. Dowodzi to, że musieli się osiedlić już w drugiej połowie lat 70. XVIII wieku, prawdopodobnie w związku z pożarem dzielnicy żydowskiej w Inowrocławiu w 1775 roku. Początkowo odsetek ludności żydowskiej w Strzelnie oscylował wokół 3%, aby w okresie Księstwa Warszawskiego wzrosnąć do około 4%. Natomiast tuż po ponownym przejściu Strzelna pod władzę Prus liczba tamtejszych Żydów podwoiła się.

Relacje polsko-żydowskie w powiecie wieluńskim w II Rzeczypospolitej

Zagadnienie relacji polsko-żydowskich w powiecie wieluńskim w II Rzeczypospolitej nie było podejmowane przez wielu badaczy. Trudno jest dokonać ich jednoznacznej oceny ze względu na złożoność problemu. Były one kształtowane przez ówczesną sytuację społeczno-ekonomiczną. Sprowadzały się one do: handlu, wydarzeń społecznych i religijnych oraz polityki. Niezależnie od przykładów zarówno przyjaznego współistnienia, jak i incydentalnych zdarzeń o charakterze przestępczym, w omawianym okresie splecione dzieje ludności polskiej i żydowskiej wpłynęły na dynamiczny rozwój społeczny tych terenów w warunkach niepodległego kraju. Obecność Żydów na tych terenach, którzy byli skupieni w siedmiu gminach wyznaniowych, została zakończona w wyniku skutków II wojny światowej.
