Ofiara czy drapieżca? Kobieta-potwór w wybranych powieściach Aleksieja Szołochowa

Anna N. Wilk’s chapter delivers an analysis of novels by Alexei Sholokhov (Tyelo and Podval ) as an example of an updated vision of the dark side of femininity. Over the centuries, women have been accused of having magical abilities. Consequently, their physicality have been viewed as arousing both desire and fear of death, or loss of control over one’s life. Different varieties of female monsters survived in cultures aroundthe world as the antithesis of the usual “human” women, such as, for example, demonic lovers or vindictive, malicious ghosts. Despite the development of civilization and social changes leading to the empowerment of women in family, social, and professional life, the aforementioned concerns are still haunting the collective imagination. In Sholokhov’s novels, “women-monsters” focus their attacks on men, exhibiting outrageous brutality and sadism. Wilk’s analysis allows to demonstrate that the fear of the negative femininity is still an actual, timeless trope in popular culture.

The article outlines the aesthetic and culturological context of the inception and functioning of the series “Anna Karenina. The History of Vronsky” (2017) by Karen Shakhnazarov. It describes the transformations of the original narrative model of L.N.Tolstoy’s novel and its relation to the structure of the parable (Gabdullina) and the parallel story structure (Nabokov). It also interprets the novel’s narrative assembly with the documentary prose of V. V. Veresaev as a model of presenting Russian history of the end of the XIX – early XX century.

From a theoretical point of view the Russian literature is highly inspiring in its specific development from the Middle Ages to the present. Based on the research of literary theory and history in the broader context of Slavic languages and literatures the author outlines in several related studies the concept of the theory and history of Russian literature viewed from positions of comparative and genre studies in the background of several other Slavic and European literatures. As a natural part of Slavonic Studies this work follows current attempts to reinvent the theory and history of Slavic literatures. The text can also be seen as a preparatory study for designing comparative history of Russian literature and Slavic Literatures.

Splot. Szkice o poezji polskiej, rosyjskiej i żydowskiej

This collection comprises texts on poets and poems that are interwoven in numerous ways: be it historically, biographically, or literarily. The Polish, Russian, and Jewish authors discussed – some of whom belong to all three categories simultaneously – are gathered in this study based on coincidence, exception, and necessity. These include: Emil Zegadłowicz, Jerzy Liebert, Anna Akhmatova, Rachel Boymvol, Solomon Bart, Tadeusz Różewicz, Adam Czerniawski, Andrzej Busza, Anna Frajlich, and Ewa Lipska. The coincidence relies on their encounter on the pages of this book; the exception – on their relation to language or its rejection, the place of their own or its loss, nationality or its change, if not refusal; the necessity, in turn, embraces the fact that each of the authors is under the impression of being thrown into the 20th century, this so-called “futile time,” when one is bound to confront one’s biography as if it belonged to someone else, and to treat other biographies as the most intimate ones. The knots of biographies and works result in an unexpected surprise, both encapsulated in the poems by the author, and rediscovered by the reader.

Literackie konstelacje (w) twórczości Andrieja Zwiagincewa

This book presents the interpretation of the films made by Andrey Zvyagintsev, one of the best-known contemporary directors, in the context of the selected texts of Russian literature. Although his films tend to be compared with the masterpieces of the world cinematography (i.e. the achievements of Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman, Robert Bresson, Michael Haneke, Alexander Sokurov, and most often Andrey Tarkovsky) it is easy to note – both in Poland and overseas as well – the lack of thorough monographs that would treat all his works as a complete and consistent art project. This book constitutes the first attempt of such research undertaking. The presented interpretation has comparative character, its methodological basis is the category of cultural memory as expounded in the theories of Astrid Erll and Renate Lachmann, enrooting this term in a broadly understood notion of intertextuality, close to the concept of the memory of the text. Each of the chapters contains the case study of one of the short or feature films (including TV series) and turns attention to metaphors, motives and migratory themes, taking their origin in the literary texts of Mikhail Bulhakov, Ivan Bunin, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin and Lev Tolstoy. The monograph offers also a wide overview of articles published so far on Zvyagintsev in Russian, English and Polish. The author takes into account the comments given by the Russian director himself concerning his works.

Литературная сказка в индивидуальном стиле Геннадия Цыферова: в контексте чешской рецепции русской литературы для детей и молодежи во второй половине ХХ века

The monograph fills the gap in the research of Russian children’s literature from the Czech and Russian perspective. As for the time period, it is focused on the 2nd half of 20th century with an overlap into the present. It combines a new approach to the history of the Czech perception of Russian children’s literature and the first complex overview of the fairy tale works by G. Cyferov ever, with the first publication of his complete biography. The part devoted to G. Cyferov is (together with the theoretic summary on the authorial fairy tale) written in the comparative Czech-Russian view. Within the framework of Czech-Russian relations in the field of children’s literature, the work introduces into the academic discussion facts in the form of a new database of Czech translations from Russian, published in the appendix.

“Young Slavistics IV” is the seventh consecutive publication in a series of annual publications of doctoral students from the Department of Slavonic Studies in Brno. The book was introduced by a study from Prof. Ivo Pospíšil called “Generations in Literary Criticism, Their Fame and Traumas”. There are also six studies by doctoral students of different Slavonic fields, in which the students focus on specific chosen topics of Slavonic literatures, languages and cultures. Their research is based on dissertations currently being prepared. Therefore, the publication is a presentation of current research topics solved in Brno by young students of Slavonic studies and at the same time they indicate the trends which this emerging generation of researchers brings to contemporary Slavonic research.

In this article we analyze metaphoric representation of the concept “creative process” in V. Nabokov’s novel “The Gift”. The theoretical basis of research is the descriptor theory of metaphor by A.N. Baranov. The article reveals the most frequent metaphorical models of creative process in the novel and the areas of its metaphoric conceptualization.

The aim of the article is a linguistic analysis of sound images in the context of original and translated poems by Boris Pasternak. The authors focus on the author’s individual features of perceptual imagery representation. This imagery is the basis for poetry transformations found in Pasternak’s Russian translations of poems by John Keats. Sound images in the translated poems have the same semantic and ‘poetic’ characteristics as in the original works by Pasternak.

Since the examined texts are translations from Ancient Greek, also the Greek Mineje was used to analyse the units under examination.

The collective monograph brings together four authors and four scientific views on folk and authorial fairy tales. Современный польский Достоевский: рецепция писателя в ежедневнике «Gazeta Wyborcza» (1989–2019)

The book offers first-ever analysis of the Polish reception of Fyodor Dostoevsky, based on 1989-1990 material from the daily „Gazeta Wyborcza”. Over 1,200 newspaper articles have been woven into a panorama of the writers’ reflections in Polish culture. The author traces the reception of Dostoevsky’s biographical narrative, his literary and journalistic oeuvre, and his correspondence, presents a comparative discussion of literary and cultural interrelations, glimpses into theatre stages and cinema theatres, traces the presence of Dostoevsky’s literary legacy in the Polish educational process, history, politics, social life, and mass and elite cultures, as well as other, surprising contexts. Special attention is paid to Dostoevsky’s world of ideas as interpreted in "Gazeta Wyborcza": his Christo- and anthropocentrism, the women’s question, “the Polish question”, “the Eastern question”, etc. The publication is aimed at humanities scholars as well as anyone interested in Fyodor Dostoevsky and Polish, Russian and world cultures.

Sergej Lebeděv a promýšlení ruských devadesátek

Sergej Lebedev (1981) is one of the most translated and highly appreciated contemporary Russian authors of fiction. In his books, Lebedev repeatedly attempts to grasp the meaning of the Soviet past for today’s Russia. His novel The People of August (Ljudi avgusta, 2016) addresses the issue of the 1990s. It is set in the geographical space of the post-socialist countries. The protagonist travels across Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Kazakhstan in search of victims of the Stalinist terror. The present article discusses Lebedev’s approach to the 1990s in comparison with novels that reflect the same period as their immediate present. In different national and cultural contexts, among the novels that have constructed literary models of the post-socialist world, the ones that stand out include Peter Pišťanek’s Rivers of Babylon (1991), Jáchym Topol’s City Sister Silver (Sestra, 1994) and Viktor Pelevin’s Generation “P” (1999). These are novels generally labelled as postmodernist. They portray the 1990s societies as a battlefield of different tribes fighting with each other for resources and power. While Lebedev’s novel presents the same type of general picture of the 1990s, its protagonist is driven by a higher purpose. He is trying to uncover the truth about the traumatic past and to understand how the past affects the present and the future. In my paper I therefore propose to label Lebedev’s writing as metamodernist, as it revitalizes historicity, affect and depth.

Umění drásat. současné „ženské psaní“ v rusku

Vasyakina’s novel Rana (2021) is characterized by a minimalist style. In this novel, through the voice of her alter ego – the poet Oksana – she processes the traumatic experience of the death of her own mother, who fell ill with cancer. The narrative method is characterized by a ritualistic repetition that oscillates between autobiography and essay. Oksana tells the existential story of her dying mother in contrast to her lesbian experiences. The problem of gender creates a counterpoint to the trauma of the death of a loved one. The present study interprets Vasyakina’s novel in relation to the philosophical thinking of the French feminist Hélène Cixous.
