Recepcja poezji Wisławy Szymborskiej w Korei – część druga

The previous article aimed at analysing the reactions of writers, poets, artists, critics and readers to the volume “The End and the Beginning”, which was translated into Korean in 2007. In this article the author continues her research on the reception of Szymborska’s poetry in South Korea. This time she presents the reaction of the Korean media and selected critics on another poetic volume of the Polish Nobel Prize Winner translated into Korean: “Enough”.

Явление калькирования в польском говоре жителей деревни Веpшина в Сибири

Vershina is a Polish village in Siberia inhabited by Polish settlers who moved there of their own volition. The migration was a result of attempt of improving the economic standards of their living. As they reach the territory of the Russian nation, Polish settlers started the process of gradual language assimilation. As a result, they create a unique Polish dialect that is used up to nowadays. Polish dialect contains linguistic calques, borrowings, hybrids and more examples of linguistic interference. The article presents the topic of linguistic calques, grouping them into five groups (structural, semantic, phraseological, morphological and syntactical) and gives examples of each of the group. It shows how big is the influence of the Russian language on the Polish dialect.

Fragen der Sprachverarbeitung und des Sprachbewusstseins am Beispiel des Deutschen als L2, des Englischen als L3 und des Schwedischen als L4 polnischer Germanistikstudenten

The study aims to investigate the processing of four simultaneously activated languages, that is, Polish as L1, German as L2, English as L3 and Swedish as L4, in written L4 production. Errors which can be attributed to negative transfer and interference, as well as the participants’ ability to exploit the similarities between the languages, which reflects their language awareness, are analysed here. As the results show, all the four languages are indeed activated and participate in the processing, but at the same time a lot of intralingual interaction between Swedish words and structures can be observed, and despite the language distance, the native language also remains an important source of transfer and interference.

Osobliwości idiolektu przedstawiciela średniego pokolenia staroobrzędowców regionu suwalsko-augustowskiego

The Old Believers appeared on the territory of contemporary Poland in the second half of the 18th century. Back then they lived in isolation, therefore in the 20th century the intensification of contacts with Polish linguistic-cultural surroundings occurred. Assimilative processes sped up after the World War II. A little bit later differences in the speech of individual generations started to develop, which became very clear in the 21st century. Competence of the younger generations in the Russian dialect is more and more limited, the youngest community representatives are displaying tendencies of the linguistic change. The informer M-1977, whose idiolect has been the subject of analysis, is the representative of the youngest members of middle-age generation. The informer uses the Russian local dialect and Polish language on the level of the elaborated code and because of the preserved dialectal features, stylistic richness and the productivity in borrowing the lexis and the phraseology, he may be considered as an outstanding personality in his community.

The article discusses Walery Pisarek’s activities and contribution to the shaping of the Polish media law system. Beginning with the studies of the press law of the European socialist states in 1973–1974, which is still an extremely valuable source of knowledge about socialist media systems, it describes other aspects of Professor’s activity, including his participation in legislative works concerning the mass media law, as well as the Polish Language Act, and his contribution to the creation of the Council for the Polish Language at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Professor Walery Pisarek was a chairman of the Council and participated in its works until the end of his life.

О сакралној семантици српскословенских сложеница високог стила

The paper analyses the compounds that represent the productive constituent category in sacral Serbo-Slavonic literary works and in the whole period of the Church Slavonic language. In reference to the criterion of the productivity of the compound’s first constituent element, the author embarks on the analysis of their sacral semantics, categorizing them according to their semantic types. The specificity of targeted material calls for a multidisciplinary approach, so that in the discussion of the Christian meaning of the compounds, especially those that hold the status of theological terms, the author is obliged to use theological literature. The analysis will show that just as the “occurrence of Christ means infinitely more than the words can convey”, the sacral meaning says much more than the abstract meaning of words.

Taking Advantage of Technologies: Using a Multi-platform Tool for Formative Assessment in English Language Classes

We live in an era of advanced technology, where every part of our daily lives is by some means related to science. Rapid technological advancement is also clearly revolutionizing the environment in which education takes place. Not only common educational stages as subdivisions of formal learning but also universities are considered to be technologically advanced places predominantly due to the by now common skills relevant to using services accessible via a computer. In conjunction with the rapid development of technology, the shifts in formative assessment methods are also observable. Currently, it is less challenging for teachers to administer a test, instantly evaluate the results and analyze gain scores than ever before. Innovative technology-based formative assessment constitutes a component of what characterizes any modern classroom environment. It provides essential information about what students have understood and what they do find problematic. This means the assessments are also considered valuable guides in helping students to improve their performance. By the same token, teachers can use them to determine if any further instructions are necessary. One of the presently emerging technologies is Socrative, an interactive, real-time, multi-platform tool marketed as a free and user-friendly online system that empowers students to answer questions posed by instructors using any device connected to the Internet. Even though it is obvious that teachers recognize the use of multi-platform assessment tools as highly efficient, there is still necessary to point out that attention should similarly be directed at students’ perceptions. This paper presents the results of a study the aim of which was the qualitative investigation of students’ perceptions of using Socrative in a university environment.

Terminologia medyczna w Nowym dykcjonarzu Michała Abrahama Troca na tle źródeł z XVI i XVII wieku

In this paper, 74 medical terms excerpted from Nowy dykcjonarz (New dictionary) by Michał Abraham Trotz were subject to semantic and formal analyses. The relevant material was presented in the context of the medical lexis being in operation in the 16th and 17th centuries and confronted with the medical vocabulary present in the study by W. Bystrzonowski titled Informacya matematyczna (Mathematical information) of 1749. The analysis of the medical terminology collected by Trotz is aimed to expand our knowledge of the medical vocabulary present in the Polish language of the first half of the 18th century since, as specialists note, there are few studies discussing the medical lexis of that period, and therefore our cognition of the scientific sphere of the human activity in this respect is limited. The presented analyses show that the medical terminology collected in Nowy dykcjonarz is mainly old lexis, which is well-established in the Polish language, the origin of which is Polish (lexical borrowings include 13 units), and which came into existence as a result of word formation, syntactic, and semantic derivation. The presence of numerous synonymous names, which prove, among others, that the Polish medical terminology has still been in the phase of formation, has also been noticed.

Polish Language in Jewish Daily Life: The Press and Popular Literature in the 1930s

This article discusses the spread of the Polish language among the Jewish population in the 1930s. Its source is the daily press, which was one of the most important institutions of interwar Jewish culture in the Polish language and one of the key institutions in which Polish served as a means of written communication in Jewish life. The press can be regarded as one of the principle sources indicating the main modern areas of Jewish communication in Polish and documenting the expansion of this communication from the public to the private sphere, from the exchange of opinions on social, political, and artistic problems to the discussion of everyday issues, family life, or even the most intimate subjects. The Polish-Jewish popular daily press created opportunities for speaking about everyday life through journalistic and literary genres dealing with topics related to family, marriage, sex, health, fashion, cooking, housekeeping, raising children, schools and universities, sport, entertainment, etiquette. The appearance of Polish-Jewish sensationalist newspapers at the beginning of the 1930s signaled the emergence of new audiences using the Polish language. The interwar vernacularization of the Polish language manifests itself in its growing instrumental value and change in its symbolic signification. The increasingly widespread use of Polish was accompanied by the weakening of its role as a symbol of integration with Polishness and Polish culture.

Od znaczenia do konceptu: pragmatyczno-kulturowe aspekty specyfikacji semantycznej

The author discusses theoretical issues of functional semantics, especially such directions of the contemporary anthropological linguistics as ethnosemantics and cognitive semantics. The diversification of the content of a lexical meaning under the influence of external, mainly pragmatic and cultural, factors is the primary object of interest here. Therefore, the author considers the degree of semantic specification of lexical units at various levels of interpersonal communication: both general and subcultural. As assumed by the contemporary cultural linguistics, a concept is considered to be a category of representation of knowledge encoded in language signs. The author gives arguments in favour of the view that the opposition of the (lexical, general) meaning and concept is gradual and concerns the scope of semantic information encoded in the sign in accordance with adaptive requirements.

Leksyka muzyczna w rosyjsko-polskiej leksykografii. Stan obecny versus potrzeby użytkowników

In order to meet the expectations of receivers, who come across vocabulary from various areas in their everyday life, general bilingual dictionaries include lexis from many different fields. This article analyses one such group in Russian-Polish lexicography: musical lexis. The analysis offered here considers translation pairs extracted from two most comprehensive Russian-Polish dictionaries. The study categorises musical lexis into semantic classes and verifies the accuracy, semantic relevance and currency of provided equivalents. The aim was to establish whether general bilingual lexicography meets the needs of users looking for equivalents in this lexical area. Basing on selected material, the article also compares the structure of entries in each dictionary and considers cultural background of musical lexis in the context of Russian culture. To illustrate the issues in focus, the study comments on a number of examples and proposes some solutions to problematic cases.

Patterns of Morphological Integration of Slavic Loan Nouns in Petkevičius’ Catechism (1598) as an Indication of Their Origin and Chronology

This article focuses on the morphological integration of Slavic loan nouns featuring in Merkelis Petkevičius’ Catechism (1598) into the Lithuanian language. It attempts to establish whether the pattern of adaptation of a Slavic loanword to a particular Lithuanian stem can suggest its more precise origin. In order to achieve this objective, I extracted all Slavic loan nouns from Petkevičius’ Catechism, identified their stems and meanings, and established their equivalents in Slavic languages of the relevant period (Old Russian, Ruthenian, Old and Middle Polish). Comparing this data made it possible to establish some common patterns of integration of Slavic loanwords into the morphological system of the Lithuanian language. A direct relationship was identified between the endings and gender of the Slavic words and the Lithuanian stems into which they were integrated. Therefore, in some cases the pattern of adaptation of a Slavic loanword can suggest its path into the Lithuanian language.

O PROJEKCIE KORPUSU POLSZCZYZNY DO 1500 ROKU

This paper presents the assumptions of the Corpus of Polish until 1500, which is being developed as part of the project titled Baza leksykalna średniowiecznej polszczyzny (do 1500 roku). Fleksja (Lexical Database of Medieval Polish (until 1500). Inflection). It introduces the fundamental objectives of the project, namely preparing an inflectional description of all (inflected) words from the time until 1500 and building a morphosyntactically annotated collection of texts from the same period. Afterwards, the authors discuss the present digital collections of Old Polish texts. In the main part of the paper, they present the criteria for selecting sources for the Corpus under creation and their elaboration methods, which refer to the solutions developed in the Electronic Corpus of Polish Texts from the 17th and 18th centuries (until 1772). Their major modifications aimed to adapt the structural and morphosyntactic annotations for the purpose of describing Mediaeval Polish are discussed on selected examples.

LEKSYKA WSPÓLNOODMIANOWA XVII-WIECZNEJ POLSZCZYZNY (NA PRZYKŁADZIE SŁOWNICTWA UTWORÓW WACŁAWA POTOCKIEGO)

This paper presents the results of stylistic and semantic research on Middle Polish vocabulary represented by 300 nominal names excerpted from selected works by Wacław Potocki (1621–1696). The insufficient number of studies dedicated to stylistics of the 17th-century lexis encouraged the author to carry out the analyses. Based on the works by A. Markowski and D. Buttler, which describe methods of identifying common inflection vocabulary of the contemporary Polish, the author makes an attempt to apply similar examinations to old lexis. By means of vocabulary research and her own analyses, she separates, among others, sets of expressive, specialist and erudite vocabulary from the collected material, which in turn permits her to distinguish a group of neutral, stylistically unmarked, lexis from among 300 nouns. The employment of the structuralist method of semantic fields for Middle Polish common words enables the development of a thematic grid representing the distribution of the studied units in individual classes of real meanings. A comparative analysis of the semantic layer of the common vocabulary in two distant historical phases confirms a high stability and universal anthropocentrism of this part of the lexical resource of Polish.

OSIEMNASTOWIECZNE PODRĘCZNIKI GEOGRAFII JAKO ŹRÓDŁA W BADANIACH NAD ROZWOJEM POLSKIEGO SŁOWNICTWA GEOGRAFICZNEGO

This paper presents a fragment of research on the history of the Polish geographical vocabulary. In the 18th century, geography became a separate discipline of modern knowledge and, in consequence, also an independent school subject. Handbooks are valuable sources in analysing discipline-related lexis, in particular in the period when this word resource was formed in the Polish language. This paper discusses various methods of introducing and explaining geographical vocabulary that are applied in handbooks, and the characteristics of the lexis of those days, such as vague distinctions of semantic scopes of lexemes, lack of stabilisation of the resource. The examinations of the material enable the observation of the evolving crystallisation process of the Polish geographical vocabulary. Handbooks have undoubtedly played a significant role in popularising geographical lexis.
