The text analyses some particular features of the culture of the Antiquity and their projections into Western art, more specifically the ideas of love and happiness, of the artist/creator, of the roles of women in society and art. By tracing literary examples from the Antiquity, as well as literary historiography I will highlight the stable lines of representation which have also fed into the topos of West European imaginary – the image of the woman artist/creator (Sappho, Corinna), the myth of the male artist/creator and his model – “muse” (Kampaspa, Phryne, Lais, Aspasia, Cynthia, Fornarina), the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea.

Enlightenment and Nation-Defence Profile of Ján Čaplovič

Ján Čaplovič (1780 - 1847) was one of the major figures of the Slovak national-revivalist generation, in large part due to the role he played in bridging the professional and language gaps during the reform course of the rulers of the Austrian monarchy, and the struggle of the Hungarian nobility for Hungarian independence in the late 18th and early 19th centuries due to the search for soft but effective forms of nation-defence activities. This study presents the enlightenment and nation-defence profile of the Slovak patriot Ján Čaplovič who has received minimal attention from the Slovak academic community after 1990s. Although he is not considered a prominent national revivalist, his publishing devoted to ethnographic and national defence issues significantly contributed to Slovaks taking their stance in the multinational Austrian monarchy, in strengthening their ethnic identity, and in fostering the process of codification of their literary language as the most important national identification sign in 1843. The study is divided into three relatively separate but interrelated sections. The first part outlines his enlightenment profile, with special attention paid to its most important component, which was used in his ethnographic and patriotic works. The second part profiles the Slovak national defences of the first four decades of the 19th century of authors such as Pavol Senický, Juraj Rohonyi, Samuel Hoič, Matej Šuhajda, Ján Chalupka, Jozef Meltzer, Ondrej Soltys, Ľudovít Štúr, Ján Francisci, and Michal Miloslav Hodža. Their defences played an important role in supporting active political forms of enforcing the ethnic-emancipatory demands of the representatives of the Slovak nation-forming elite for a more democratic settlement of the contemporaneous conditions in the monarchy, especially in historic Hungary. The last part analyses in detail the national defences of Ján Čaplovič and evaluates their expressive value.

Agoronimy i hodonimy jako wyraz ideologii, kultury i propagandy w okupowanej Polsce podczas II wojny oewiatowej

The article presents the results of the analysis of the trends in the changing of the names for streets and squares of a selection of towns and villages in the Busko County during the Second World War. The examples are sorted because of the function of the name: the hodonyms, which show a direction, the hodonyms with the lokalization function, the possessive hodonyms, the hodonyms with describing function, the names of streets, which remind about the important people or events. Despite of it is drawn the attention to the tendencies of the naems’ giving in each place.

Odniesienie do Boga i tradycji chrześcijańskich w codziennej komunikacji na przestrzeni wieków

The article deals with commonly used (in typical communicative situations) conventionalized linguistic forms containing in their lexical structure elements, referring to widely understood Christian traditions. The research material includes conversational formulas in Polish extracted from the Polish-German phrasebooks. The study has a diachronic character. On the basis of the analyses carried out, it is possible to trace changes in the area of language use in the abovementioned scope, which have taken place from the 16th century to the present day.

Łacińska humiliatio a staropolska pokora. Wpływ polszczyzny na łacinę w średniowieczu

The paper discusses cross-linguistic interference observed while studying Latin humiliatio, humilitas (and additionally homagium, venia) and Old Polish pokora, referring to the statutory and customary legal practice of ‘public humiliation of the culprit, most often the murderer, and their request for forgiveness’. The research focuses on the linguistic and socio-cultural changes that made the juridical meaning of humiliatio, humilitas emerge. The paper offers a diachronic analysis of the development of a set of words that share the root humil*, followed by a synchronic study of the vocabulary attested in Old Polish, Old Czech, and in Medieval Latin used in other countries. The article discusses linguistic and socio-cultural factors that might have contributed to the development of the juridical sense of humiliatio, humilitas in Medieval Latin in Poland, and concludes with a hypothesis that the described sense emerged as a calque of one of the senses of the Polish word pokora.

Из истории изучения старообрядчества северо-западной Беларуси (обзор литературы): современный этап

This article is the second part of the historiographical review of publications on the history, language and culture of the Old Believers of North-Western Belarus. It analyses this problematic in the modern period (1990–2022). The review presents characteristics of both Belarusian and foreign (Lithuanian, Polish, Russian) historiography. The modern period is marked by the growing interest to the Old Believers in Belarus. As a result, a considerable volume of historical, ethnographic, linguistic and art history research has been published. A significant part of these studies is devoted to the Old Believer population of North-Western Belarus. The paper defines the main directions of scientific analysis of this problematic, characterizes methods and sources of the conducted research. We conclude that in spite of a rather significant volume of published researches, a number of important questions concerning the history, language and culture of Old Believers of North-Western Belarus have not been elaborated by now.

This paper aims to consider how a person who has become a victim of human trafficking depicts him-/herself, as well as to comprehend the existence of models of metaphorization related to such people. The text represents an attempt to analyze a language depiction in everyday speech through a study of some first-person narratives (interviews) in Bulgarian and in Polish of people who have been direct participants in this crime.

Сексизмът – между реалното и въображаемото

The concepts of feminism and sexism are constantly being speculated upon. Instead of clarifying their content, thanks to the motives that determine their pragmatic functionality, it becomes increasingly blurred and manipulable. The purpose of the research is, with the help of the linguistic material involved, to analyze the grounds for one or another statement, which has acquired the status of almost an „ultimatum“ for an immediate change of the existing situation, and to propose a different conceptual angle of the problem. The research methods used are: cognitive-pragmatic, psycholinguistic, comparative and semantic-analytical. The results confirm the questionable status of linguistic sexism and shift the emphasis from the field of accusations to the opposite gender to personal self-improvement and fruitful communication, which would lead to a lasting and promising gender relationship.

"Un attardato filologo tuttofare": Sante Graciotti e "Ricerche slavistiche"

The essay presents the biographical and scientific profile of Sante Graciotti, one of the greatest Slavists of the last seventy years and for many years editor in chief of “Ricerche slavistiche”. The author retraces the development of Graciotti’s university career and outlines the main themes that interested the scholar, stressing his incessant effort towards the recovery of the idea of a Slavia equally receptive to the treasures of the East and West of Europe. The essay is accompanied by a complete bibliography of Sante Graciotti’s publications in “Ricerche slavistiche” and a survey of particularly memorable and inspirational quotations taken from his essays.

Gli studi linguistici in "Ricerche slavistiche" (1952-2021)

The author discusses articles published in “Ricerche slavistiche” from 1952 to 2021 pertaining the field of Slavic Linguistics, so she does not take into consideration the numerous papers devoted to philology and ecdotics. Firstly, she presents essays on lexicon and language variety (§ 1) within the various Slavic languages, then she considers those essays that are more clearly devoted to morphosyntactic phenomena (§ 2). She pays special attention to the evolution of approaches, methods and themes, together with elements of the Italian and international context helping to understand the role of “Ricerche slavistiche” in the spread and development of Linguistics in Italian Slavic studies during the seventy years of the journal’s activity.

Settant'anni di studi polonistici sulle pagine di "Ricerche slavistiche"

The article aims at analyzing the contents of the first and the new series of the academic journal "Ricerche slavistiche” from its foundation to 2021, in order to identify and define the lines of development of Polonistic research in Italy. The analysis makes it possible to indicate the main hermeneutical directives of the first phase of the journal's existence in the studies on ancient Polish literature and on the literary relations between Italy and Poland. In a diachronic perspective, it is possible to witness the transmission of the values and convictions of the great Slavist Giovanni Maver to subsequent generations of Italian Polonists. “Ricerche slavistiche” in fact reflected his deep conviction that Polish studies cannot ignore the great historical and cultural heritage of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The journal’s founder believed in the constitutively hybrid and composite character of Polish culture, a fertile and complex melting pot, a terrain of encounter, exchange and dialogue between the Latin and Byzantine, Germanic and Slavic worlds, where products and values of European civilization, often still little known, have been developed for many centuries.

This study deals with a chapter in the history of Czech genre theory, namely the second (corrected) edition of Josef Jungmann’s Slovesnost (‘Belles-lettres’; 1845) and its descriptions of genre systems, in particular his system of six poetic types. It also deals with the relationship of this system to the temporal context, i.e. the past (summarizing the thinking on genre at the time that Jungmann wrote Slovesnost) and future (indicating those aspects in which Jungmann’s system remains theoretically relevant today).

K posesivním adjektivům typu matčin ve staré a střední češtině

The paper presents the results of the research which explores the diachronic development of possessive adjectives in Old and Middle Czech. The research deals primarily with possessive adjectives formed from feminine nouns (constituent type matčin) and is mainly focused on the morphological aspects. On the basis of the excerpted material, the author observes the cases in which possessive adjectives of the type matčin have been preserved and also pays attention to the competition of the nominal and composite (adjectival) forms in each case. The possessive adjectives are shortly commented at the syntactic level as well.

Вторые международные студенческие чтения кафедры славистики Вильнюсского университета

On October 13–14, 2023, the Second Student Readings were held at the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, organized by the Department of Slavic Studies of the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Baltic Countries of the VU. Participants in the Readings were students and doctoral students from two Lithuanian universities (Vilnius and Klaipeda), from universities in Austria, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Croatia, France, Italy, who presented 19 reports. Student readings showed the undoubted potential of young researchers, their ability to make new discoveries in various areas of Russian and, more broadly, Slavic culture, literature, and language.

The article juxtaposes Polish and Bulgarian terms in terms of the names of courts, the names of court authorities, assistants, parties and other persons involved in the case in Polish and Bulgarian. The compilation of the juxtaposition made it possible to resolve what type of equivalence relations we are dealing with in the type of court records under study. To determine the type of equivalence relations between Polish and Bulgarian legal terms, I used the concept of denotative equivalence distinguished by Wolter Koller. Recognizing the types of equivalence relations is the starting point for considering the difficulties and translation strategies that the translator must undertake.

Родина в библейских переводах XVI в., созданных на территории Речи Посполитой и Великого княжества Литовского

W artykule dokonano analizy pojęcia ojczyzny w przekładach biblijnych z XVI wieku, powstałych na terenie Rzeczypospolitej i Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego na język polski – katolicka Biblia Leopolity (1561) i Jakuba Wujka (1599), protestancka Biblia Radziwiłłowska czyli Brzeska (1563), ariański przekład Szymona Budnego (Biblia Nieświeska, 1572) i cerkiewno-słowiański (Biblia Ostrogska, 1580–1581), a także w przekładzie hybrydowym Franciszka Skaryny (1517–1519). Twierdzi się, że pomimo różnic wyznaniowych i językowych tłumaczenia biblijne ujawniają dużą liczbę podobieństw. Podobieństwa te dają podstawy, by sądzić, że w XVI w. stanowił punkt zwrotny w rozwoju pojęcia ojczyzny, natomiast na jego kształtowanie się we współczesnym rozumieniu miały wpływ zarówno teksty Nowego, jak Starego Testamentu, lecz oddziaływały one w różny sposób.

In the article, rhetorical devices which help to express external emotions are described and supported with examples (exclamatio, evidentia, sermocinato and similar prosopopeia, expolitio and similitudo). In the song genre, apart from the main constitutional role, these devices perform two other interdependent tasks: the first one is related to the sender, the second one – to the recipient. In addition to their expressive and conative functions, the supporting role is assigned to the following functions: amplifying, motivational and aesthetic. It is important that the beauty and charm of short, vocally performed pieces are to a large extent dependent on not only on the music but also on the words used in them to successfully express and engender emotions.

L’immagine del Turco nelle cronache moldave in lingua slava

The Moldavian chronicles in the Slavic languages of the 15th–16th centuries expose the events of the country in a time of grave difficulties for the survival of the Christian states of Europe, threatened by the expansionary policy of the Ottoman Empire. The authors closely follow the progressive expansion of the Sublime Porte and the fall of boroughs, citadels, and cities (Gallipoli, Sofia, Veliko Tărnovo, Thessaloniki), as well as Chilia, Cetatea Albă, fortified Moldavian citadels. Naturally, the chroniclers rejoice for the rarest victories on the battlefield of the European sovereigns and the princes of Moldavia; they are saddened by the defeats suffered by Moldavian and, more generally, Christian arms. Above all, they fear that the new ‘paganism’ coming from the now subjugated Constantinople can suffocate the ancestral religion, although they do not neglect the dangerousness of other beliefs, such as the Lutheran, professed even by a prince. In the final analysis, the chronicler considers himself a scriba Dei who must educate the reader and strengthen him in the true faith, orthodoxy.
