In this article, the opposition of the “own – alien” in the Russian-language pressof the Slavic states is considered. The research is based on the hypothesis assumingthe presence of the opposition “own-alien” in media texts, which may be due to massmigrations, frequent acts of terrorism, and complicated political relations between statesin the modern world. The article presents ways of manifesting the opposition “own – alien”in media texts and discusses the features of the lexical expression of this opposition.

Карнавальний топос маски у романах Вiтольда Гомбровича Фердидурке та Гео Шкурупiя Дверi в день

The article is devoted to the study of the features of the mask topos in the novels of Witold Gombrowich Ferdydurke and Geo Shkurupia Doors in the day. On the basis of the basic concepts of carnivalization of Mikhail Bakhtin, features of the functioning of the mask image are considered, which is one of the means of expressing new forms of communication with the recipient and the metaphorical language. The mask in the experimental / avant-garde works determines the individual characters of the characters, contributes to the irony of the grotesque. The mask-stereotype in the novel by Witold Gombrowich is the bearer of a certain set of values of the hero, Geo Shkurupii through the mask of the death of the hero demonstrates the existential choice of the hero.

Кризис советского метанарратива (современная ситуация восточнославянских литератур)

The author of the article revises the process of gradual deconstruction of soviet metanarrativein literature of Russia, Belorussia and Ukraine after 1991st. Each of those literatures built its own identity, which had to replace soviet cultural discourse. That process was contradictory, but still quite productive. Contemporary post-soviet literature is in boundary situation. It means that the crisis of the transition period has not been completely overcome. The main problems in creating of the national narratives are neo-imperial (in Russia) or neo-colonial (in Belorussia and Ukraine)tendencies.

Polski Wykop, czyli Wschód Andrzeja Stasiuka

The aim of this paper is to compare and discuss, direct and indirect, intertextual references to Andrzej Platonov’s The Foundation Pit in The East of Andrzej Stasiuk. A. Stasiuk’s novel is an attempt of self-discovery, finding own roots, seeing „clarity of existence”. Autobiographical narrator of the novel often refers to fragments of The Foundation Pit by A. Platonov, which he finds in the past of his grandparents, his parents and his own. Characters in both novels try to find the same sense, hidden truth, despite time and geographical gap dividing them. Traveller from The East, communism child, recalls resettlement and Jewish extermination, in other words about matter annihilation. Image of Poles, Russians, Chinese people and communism creates integral whole and forces to reflect over past, present and future times. Whereas the East, which according to narrator, begins at the east bank of Vistula and reaches to China, becomes a foundation pit, where through fire and destruction, foundations of communism were built.

Poezja Pawła Tyczyny w tłumaczeniu Kazimierza Andrzeja Jaworskiego

Pavlo Tychyna was one of the Ukrainian poets whose works were very popular among Polish critics and translators during the interwar period. In the 1930s, the value of his poetry was also noticed by the representatives of Lublin’s literary circles, among them – Kazimierz Andrzej Jaworski. In the years 1933–1970, a few of his translations were published in the magazines “Kamena”, “Biuletyn Polsko-Ukraiński” and “Zet”. The poet from Lublin focused his attention on Tychyna’s early poetry from three collections: Сонячні кларнети (Clarinets of the Sun, 1918), Плуг (The Plow, 1920) and Вітер з України (The Wind from Ukraine, 1924). Jaworski’s interest in the works of the Ukrainian poet was influenced by the similarity of the topics and the attitude to writing techniques. In the works of both poets, analogous artistic strategies can be noticed, related e.g. to shaping images with polyphony, personification and symbols. The translator from Lublin paid special attention to rhythm, which was very significant in Tychyna’s poetry. It is visible not only in the way the images are created, but also in the melody of the poems, which performs semantic functions. Both artists are also close in discovering new kinds of expression. In their poems, they present it with images, colours and sounds which introduce rhythmical properties into the works.

Ukraińskie frazeologizmy w polskim przekładzie Piotra Kuprysia Eneidy Iwana Kotlarewskiego

Folklore phraseology was a inexhaustible source of linguistic measures for Ivan Kotliarevsky, as it allowed him to build humorous and satirical effects through introducing into his literary works colloquial, dialectal and jocular set phrases. The aim of this paper is to undertake comparative analysis of set phrases in the original and in the Polish translation of Eneyida in order to point out similarities and differences in these two languages. The author focuses on the translation strategies implemented to translate set phrases, and analysing particular non-phraseme word connections which very often replace set phrases in the target text.

Aleksandra Kiosewa koncepcja samokolonizacji i efekt symmorfozy

Stemming from the general postcolonial theoretical tradition, the concept of self-colonisation proposed by the Bulgarian scholar Alexander Kiosev has proved inspiring to Polish scholars. This article attempts to examine more closely Kiosev’s meandering self-reflective musings on what he called his “metaphor” of self-colonization, an idea he ultimately rejected in view of the undesirable ressentiment it tends to produce. By illustrating the historical and cultural background underpinning the concept of self-colonisation I seek to identify the roots of potential intercultural misunderstanding. Above all, I focus on the consequences of the teleological approach inherent in Kiosev’s concept. Those areexpressed in identifying manufactured (sic!) origins with an account which can be couched in the language of a politically and therapeutically conditioned method of research. This leads to a symmorphic deformation of those origins, aligned to the requirements of the modern world.

The Intricacies of the Postmodern Convention – Thomas Ruggles Pynchon in Polish Translation

The article presents the prominent figure of the contemporary American writer, Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, a leading representative of the postmodern literary convention. The study contains a brief introduction of his works, with a special focus on the canonical novel for the postmodern convention i.e. Gravity’s Rainbow. The study will also apply McHale’s concept of ‘ontological dominant,’ which aptly describes the shift from epistemological issues to existential ones occurring from modernist to postmodernist literature. Subsequently, the article discusses the main aspects of Pynchon’s literary works and e.g. the presumed mode of reading i.e. ‘creative paranoia,’ encyclopaedicity and the interpretatively inconclusive binarities. Then, two fragments from Gravity’s Rainbow in Polish translation are analyzed in terms of the preservation of the source text sense productive potential according to Venuti’s theory of ‘foreignization.’ Finally, the study offers conclusions related to the reasons as to why there seem to be considerable deficiencies in the Polish rendition of Pynchon’s novels, attributing this fact to the lack of an equivalent literary convention in the Polish literary environment.

Волт Витман и Алџернон Свинберн – поглед из перспективе Богдана Поповића

The paper examines A. C. Swinburne’s essay Whitmania, which serves as an illu stration of the controversial responses to the poetry of Walt Whitman. Special attention is drawn to the reception of this essay in Serbian literary criticism, i.e. in Bogdan Popo vić’s article Walt Whitman and Swinburne.”The first part of the paper offers a brief re view of the reception of Whitman’s poetry in Great Britain, particularly focusing on Swinburne’s fluctuating and often contradictory attitude towards the American poet. The second part analyzes Bogdan Popović’s essay – his translation of Whitmania and his authentic critical remarks – as well as the context in which the Serbian essay appeared. This analysis shows the way the Serbian critic used Swinburne’s essay to express his own unfavorable view of Whitman’s poetry, but also to voice his animus towards the avant-garde tendencies in literature and arts.

This paper discusses the distinction between the function of a descriptive artistic model and the explicative schemes of its realization. The descriptive model is considered as a structural-model function responsible for the cognitive representation of reality that is pictured in a text, a series of texts, creative output of an author, or a certain artistic trend. Semantics of a descriptive model is always connected to some cognitive space of the picture of the world. Based on the example of cognitive space “nature”, the author focuses on the descriptive model of the presentation of this cognitive space employed by Boris Grebenshchikov in his poetic texts. Moreover, the author determines the concepts of nature most relevant to the poet’s idiostyle.

Camp literature. Introduction

This article includes a terminological discussion regarding the notion of camp literature. Within Polish literary science, it is usually applied to literature raising the topic of German Nazi camps, particularly concentration camps and death camps, and, though less often, to Soviet camps, particularly forced labour camps. Yet the definition has proved to be excessively narrow. It should also cover, previously less studied, works of Polish literature regarding, i.a. the Polish concentration camp in Bereza Kartuska, the communist labour camps established in post-WWII Poland, and the Spanish concentration camp in Miranda de Ebro. The notion camp literature could also be applied to works devoted to internment camps, POW camps, or even ghettoes.

The Identity Construct Between Fiction and History in Amos Oz’s Tale of Love and Darkness

The research brings to the attention journals of general interest that were issued in Romania between 1855-1900. They comprise political, scientific, cultural and economic topics. The variety of subjects that the newspapers covered stands as evidence that the Jewish population in Romania was interested in finding out new information coming from a variety of fields. The following paper is concerned with the notion of identitary construct in Amos Oz’s A Tale of Love and Darkness and tries to discuss the main problems in framing the book either in the category of the novel or in that of the autobiography. Starting from these aspects, the present study analyzes the relationship between the fictional and personal/historical aspects that revolves around the issue of identity and wishes to demonstrate the presence of an ethical dimension of literature – literature as a means of accessing a tragic event from the past that altered the identitary construct.

The present essay addresses the issue of the participation of Catholic priests in the shaping of Polish literature. AKSJOMATY I MISTYFIKACJE CZYLI O ŚWIETLE I CIEMNEJ STRONIE POZNANIA. Szkic do portretu Juliana Ochorowicza

The whole civilized world takes advantage of Julian Ochorowicz’s (1850-1917) technological-scientific thought, although he does not exist in the contemporary consciousness as a genius-constructor and the author of scientific ideas. The aim of the article is to present studies on the character and significance of scientific activity led by this versatile scholar—a theorist of positivism and a writer. During his life Ochorowicz gained recognition of many international psychological societies—in Great Britain, New York, Paris, Köln, Berlin, Budapest, and Leipzig. In Poland the scientific circles treated Ochorowicz’s works (also those concerning new technologies) indulgently or disqualified them and doomed the scholar himself to exclusion. There exists a need to verify false findings concerning the significance of Ochorowicz’s creative works, mistakenly associated with romanticism, charlatanism and lack of scientific correctness. Ochorowicz is very frequently perceived through the prism of occultism and hypnology, first of all connecting the name of the author of the treatise Mental Suggestion with spiritism. The initial recognition shows that Ochorowicz was an advocate of scientism and rationalism. His research findings are strictly scientific.
