Summary/Abstract: The dissemination of economic ideas and the spread of classical political economy in the Balkans have attracted, thus far, only limited attention by the scholars of the history of economic thought. They looked at the experience of the more advanced European countries in order to gain inspirations and practical lessons. In this context, French liberalism and Germans historical school, with their stress on entrepreneurship, institutions, and market oriented reforms, succeeded in becoming a powerful paradigm in the Balkan countries. In this paper, I present some important economic facts and developments that shaped the course of economic thought in Serbia and Greece in the 1860s years. Emphasis was laid on the role of Kosta Cukić and Ioannis Soutsos who, in the field of theory, expressed liberal ideas. In the field of politics, they advocated institutional reforms that would shape the framework necessary for state development.
