Passive Voice and Resultativity

Summary/Abstract: This article explores the interaction between two grammaticalised meanings of the Bulgarian verb: passivity and resultativity. Through syntactic object-subject transformations, the study examines whether all forms of the type бидох поканен, бъдех по-канен, бивам поканен, бивах поканен, да бъда поканен, нека (да) бъда поканен, дано (да) бъда поканен, бих бил поканен express a resultative meaning. The consistent application of the transformation criterion reveals that only the grammatical formations containing the auxiliary verbs бидох and бъдех are resultative. The paper also addresses the competition between different passive forms. The argument is made that replacing forms of the type бъдех поканен with бях поканен can be justified by the fact that both forms share the same grammatical morphemes. The presence of the morpheme -Н or -Т transforms бъдех поканен into a resultative grammatical entity that is a grammatical synonym of бях поканен.
