W. Syrokomla’s heritage is diverse in genres and subjects. Therefore, it becomes a rich source of research. His biography, essays, some poetic texts are widely discussed in the works of Belarusian and foreign researchers. Updating of the issues concerning the research on W. Syrokomla’s heritage eliminates the gaps in the study of the 19th century Belarusian literature and Belarusian-Polish cultural borderland. A particular attention should be paid to W. Syrokomla’s historical poems and drawn-out stories.

The article discusses the genre and thematic evolution of short pieces of prose written by the famous Belarusian writer Yanka Bryl (1917–2006). They are known in the Belarusian terminology as “lyrical miniatures” and they were written in the last forty years of his life. Bryl begins with elusive records of his observations and thoughts about everyday life and gradually goes into general human issues, such as fate, creativity, passing of time, death, destiny. The article emphasizes the importance and influence of Bryl’s personal experience on his formation as a writer and on the way the experience is used in this genre of prose.

This paper deals with “Belarusian” passages of Pavel Josef Safarik’s book The History of the Slavic Language and Literature by All Vernaculars (Buda, 1826) and tries to include them in the context of Belarusian studies in the first third of the 19th century. The set of used and unused sources is assessed, the ways of adoption of information about Belarusian are discussed (Safarik explicitly refers to the works of Adelung, Bandtkie, Rakowiecki, Grech, Kalaidovich). It is ironic that Safarik cites Kalaidovich’s article, in which the term “Belarusian language” was used for the first time as a title of a publication in Ukrainian bibliography. It is stated that Safarik owes Rakowiecki, Kalaidovich and Grech his statements about the history of the Belarusian language. However, when defining the area of Belarusian, he first of all relied on the broad understanding of “Belarus” by geographer Georg Hassel, outlined in his Weimar book Vollständige und neueste Erdbeschreibung des Russischen Reichs in Europa nebst Polen (1821). On the basis of works written by Rakowiecki, Kalaidovich, Grech and Hassel, Safarik defines a wide area of Belarusian (Litva, White Rus’, Black Rus’, Volhynia and Podolia). It is likely that Safarik estimated the size of the population on the territory of Belarus according to Hassel’s work as well.

The author of the article discusses artistic features in the image of Polish writer Eliza Ozheshkova in modern Belarusian poetry. Ozheshova, who was of Belarusian origin, influenced the history and culture of both nations. The poems by Danuta Bichel, Ala Nikiporchyk, Jurka Golub, Viktor Shnip, Lubova Rusylki and other writers have been analyzed, which enabled to conclude that the image of Eliza Ozheshkova has conceptual value in Belarusian literature. It contains loyalty to the principles of freedom and social justice. The works in which the image of Eliza Ozheshkova appears are different in terms of genre and type. These are poems-initiations, a writer’s poetic monologues, ballads and narrative poems. A variety of intertextual devices such as quotations, reminiscences, allusions, reference to historical documents have been employed.

The article considers M. Haretski’s mythological model, which was built stepwise, from cosmogony and etymology to anthropology, and later – to eschatology. The cosmological disclosure of the world in the writer’s mythology occurs in the distinctive spatial-temporal coordinates, the initial constituents of which are represented by the images of Chaos. Primarily, M.Haretski’s characters aspire to appear in initial Chaos, to gain strength in the so-called parental bosom, which is metaphorically represented in the images of bog, parental home, world tree. The mythical-poetic concept of the world tree in the author’s mythologization reflects the most universal situation – the choice between life and death, which, in some cases, guarantees spirituality and stability.

Stankevich is a place where the spiritual principles of a man are formed, but it is also a solid foundation for self-expression. The unity of physical and trans-physical sources in the concept of home in literature enables to reveal universal existential principles of human existence.

The article is dedicated to the literary creation of a forgotten Polish and Belarusian poet Jan Kozakovich (Litvin). The poet lived at the end of 16th and the beginning of 17th century in Vilna, wrote in Polish, but in his works he is an active patriot of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The poet’s epigrams and dedication can be found in a number of books published in the late 16th – early 17th century. However, Kozakovich’s most significant work is a poem “Walnut” (Vilna 1603) – an elegy of Ovid’s “The Walnut Tree”, remade in freestyle.

The author analyses translations of Belarusian literature and texts on Belarusian issues prepared by the Czech journalist, poet, slavist and interpreter Adolf Cernў (1864–1952). Although we can call him a pioneer in the Belarusian studies in Czech Republic, his name is associated rather with his work for the magazine “Slovanskў přehled” (“Slavonic Review”, founded in 1898) and with his translation activities and the Sorabian studies. He knew Belarus from his own experience (he visited it in 1889 and 1897). He published articles about Belarus in the magazines “Světozor”, “Cas” and ˇ “Slovanský přehled”. He was the first to translate into the Czech language a poetry of the Belarusian classics Jakub Kolas and particularly Janka Kupala. The study focuses on Cerny’s translation method and directs its interest at the Bélarusian studies in the broader aspect of the author’s activities related to the Slavonic studies.

Dunin-Martsinkevich was gradually strengthened in Belarusian canon and how general estimation of his personality and his creative work changed.

In the article “Belarusian acoustic poetry in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century” the results of experimental analysis of the acoustic realization of the text are presented. In the texts a symbol is not considered as a simple carrier of meaning. Poems of modern Belarusian poets such as D. Vishnev, S. Minskevich, D. Plax, V. Sakharchuk are written with maximum attention directed to acoustic and aesthetic experience (voice and intonation) as well as to anthropological component.

The article discusses early attempts of codification of modern Belarusian literary language made by an artist Karus Kahanets and a politician Anton Lutzkevich, the authors of handwritten unpublished school grammars, at the beginning of the 20th century. A comparative analysis revealed close connection between the two grammars in the field of phonetics, morphology and linguistic terminology.
