This article examines contemporary forms and practices of parenthood. The main focus is on mothers who have regular access to Internet, good education and standard of living. The effort to understand new maternal practices goes through the Foucauldian concepts of governmentality and technologies of the self. The fi gure of the mother is discussed both as important for the biopolitical strategies of the modern family and as a main target of different parental suggestions. New practices devoted to the enforcement of child creativity and adaptivity are regarded as a means to achieve relative security and as a part of the process of inheriting social statuses. Empowerment of the mother is discussed as crucial in these forms of governing the self. Three topics are spotlighted as significant for the self-actualization of the mother and for bringing up 'successful'children. The importance of naturality, femininity and self sufficiency and their specific interpretations and correlations are discussed.

Health tourism is an important kind of tourism which appreciated all over the world in recent years. Medical, thermal, provide significant economic income to the place where the elderly care strengthening health tourism sub-branches. The purpose of this study; That our country has a great potential, but considered not sufficiently considered the problems of thermal tourism, to identify problems with and opinions of top managers and mid-level assessments, and to contribute to solutions.

Lateralizacja i lokalizacja funkcji językowych w mózgu (przegląd najważniejszych zagadnień)

The article has the nature of a general overview (inter alia it furnishes an overview of publications in the field of neurolinguistics). The author seeks an answer to the following question: where (and) how the units of speech (of language and speech) are located in the brain. The work consists of a number of parts. In the first chapter the author focuses on the nervous system (the object of neurological research). In the second chapter the author focuses on the linguistic capacity (the object of linguistic research). Both chapters distinguish the units of the brain and speech to which researchers refer in their attempts to describe the relationship between language and the brain. The third chapter alludes to (and classifies) the most recent achievements in the field of neuroscience about the lateralisation and localisation of the linguistic functions in the brain. Eventually the units of human speech are ascribed to the selected areas in the brain. The final part of the work contains a comprehensive bibliography of the subject.

Disruption and the Changing Concept of Leadership

Leadership is a catch all concept and the subject attracts intensive attention. Yet the concept, as it stands today, is obsolete. The prime parameters of people and tasks have lost content with people performance parameters going through palpable change and the fundamentals of the task seriously disrupted. Those developments are rendering concepts of leadership in their current professional and conceptual framework, blurred. Gamely and fashion prone colourful presentation of “leadership” are taking over. A serious search into the heart and soul of leadership and a formulation of building blocks is, therefore, needed. It should be serious and it should be conceptual and operationally cogent.

Projektowanie krajobrazu pracy. Między praktyczną a krytyczną antropologią projektowania

The article attempts to answer the question concerning the role anthropological reflection plays and should play in designing the work environment, or, more broadly – the workplace landscape. Drawing on Tim Ingold’s distinction between design anthropology and design ethnography, I offer an analysis of contemporary workplace landscapes and the practices of their design based on my own research experience. In doing so, I focus on two principal, i.e. “practical” and “critical”, elements of involvement of anthropology in these processes. The first case study concerns the practices of teleworkers and the question of reconciling their professional and private lives in the limited space of their homes in general, and dividing the space of home into the sphere of working and private life in particular. The second study (in which I am involved as an independent consultant working on a team designing the working style of a company) is concerned with the design of working space in a new building planned as a showcase of the firm called X.

Scientific Discourses of Differentiation by Race, Gender, and Disability from the 19th Century Until Present Day

The conflicting understandings about different levels of pain in white and black bodies potentially lead to discriminatory practices in medical institutions, which have repercussions for individuals’ health and racially frames social relations. In addition to race, stereotypes about the experience of pain and emotion exist in relation to gender and disability,which I will argue throughout this article. These scientific and popular discourses underlined discriminatory practices while influencing how people thought about race, gender, and disability.

Eugenics on the Periphery: Or Why a ‘Belarusian Eugenic Project’ Did Not Come True (1918–44)

The interwar period was characterized by the active development of national eugenics projects in Europe. A number of factors contributed to the interest in eugenics and the desire to implement them: the making of new states and consolidation of nations in East Central Europe, the need to overcome the legacy of the Great War and deal with social problems (for example, venereal diseases and prostitution), and the development of scientific and international academic contacts. Belarusian debates on eugenics took place mostly on the periphery of the more developed discourses – those in Russia, Poland, and, later on, in Germany. The Russian scholars in the larger university centres contributed to the development of the Soviet eugenics project, which gained the support of the Soviet authorities. In the first decade of their rule, the Bolsheviks were not against debates on eugenics about how to improve the ‘nature of man’. The Soviet eugenics project, which focused on studying problems of heredity, genetics, and genealogy, was stopped when the authorities placed rigid ideological controls over science. In Soviet Belarus, no academic circle appeared that engaged in the debates on eugenics. The development of the eugenics movement in Poland was closely linked to the formation of the newly established Polish state. After the Great War, the Polish eugenics movement made attempts to integrate itself into the public life of the country. Polish medical doctors contributed to the development of the eugenics movement. During the Second World War, a group of Belarusian nationalists tried to formulate a basis for a Belarusian racial eugenics project, following the main ideas of Nazi ‘racial hygiene’.

The postulated equality means equality of this law for both woman and man, which was historically connected with different entitlements.

Kritička procjena jednog viđenja eugeničkog nasljeđa u biotehnološkom dobu

The article is an expanded critical evaluation of a book Sudbina odabranih. Eugeničko nasljeđe u vrijeme genske tehnologije (The Fate of the Chosen: Eugenics’ Heritage in the Age of Gene Technology) by Darko Polšek. Taking into consideration that the author of the book a priori approves the idea of laissez-faire eugenics, i.e. of non-interventions into eugenics by the State, as his departure point, which means that total freedom of individual choice and decisions conceming the issues of birth, children and the quality of life - has been predicted, the author of the article tries to point out some unacceptable epistemological and ethical theses of such an approach to eugenics’ praxis. Namely, the author of the article demonstrates that the book does not offer convincing arguments, which should epistemologically, anthropologically, and, as a consequence, ethically, prove the main difference between the praxis of classical, so called, »rightist eugenics«, on one hand, and, so called, »new«, »private« or »leftist eugenics», on the other hand. In the article, the contents and the ideas of the book were followed. The author of the article makes efforts to mediate the main theses of the book, but sticking to its abovementioned defficiences, this results in critical examination and challenges to the book’s author visionary basic theses of laissez-faire eugenics.That fact, however, does not underestimate the value of the book as a pioneering work in Croatian language on eugenics, i.e. on libertarian concept of eugenics, and demands also significant intellectual and spiritual courage. According to the author of the article, in the context of libertarian concept, however, we have to deal with the certain praxis which transcends the border of specifically human and enters the spheres of in-human.

Józef Warszewicz (1812–1866) and taxonomical history of Warszewiczia coccinea (Vahl) Klotzsch

Józef Warszewicz (1812–1866) – traveler and naturalist, the main horticulturist (inspector) of the Botanic Garden of theJagiellonian University in Kraków, was one of the first plant collectors in the tropical regions of Central and South America. From his travels (1844–1850, 1850–1853) he sent and brought to Europe hundreds of previously unknown plants, primarily orchids, in addition to representatives of other families.One of the collected species was Warszewiczia coccinea (red warszewiczia in English, warszewiczia czerwona in Polish), described by Johann F. Klotzsch and named after the collector. It is a small tree or shrub with large, red inflorescences, growing wild in the American tropics and often cultivated as an ornamental. It plays a significant role in the culture of the island country of Trinidad and Tobago in the Little Antilles archipelago, where it is considered a “national plant”.The aim of this article is to highlight one of the chapters in the history of systematics (taxonomy) relating to Józef Warszewicz and the plants described on the basis of his collections, especially red warszewiczia.Many of the so-called “Warszewicz species” have survived in the taxonomy to this day. His unique collection is stored in the Herbarium of the Jagiellonian University – Herbarium Universitatis Iagellonicae Cracoviensis – KRA. There are specimens important to the science – lectotypes (model representations) of the species Warszewiczia pulcherrima (= W. coccinea).

Powrót do przeszłości V: pandemia. Nostalgia a świat postpandemiczny

One of the phenomena which scope expanded during the period of restrictions related to COVID-19 was a social turn towards the past, observed especially in social media, identified as a nostalgia trend. Understood as a sentimental longing for something that has already passed that causes sadness or pleasure by remembering something and wishing it could be experienced again, nostalgia was one of the tools for dealing with the hardships and uncertainty of the pandemic times. Individual users of social media willingly undertook communication focused around memories, expressing regret for times long gone that had been seen in their idealized form as easier and happier. This trend has been effectively used in marketing focused on nostalgia. It was only effective when it evokes positive memories and evokes good feelings in the recipients that encourages the more to reach for the product or service offered. This specific turn towards this period of time was used as a tool that allowed not having to face terrifying moments and often difficult present, and even more so the unknown future. Thus, uncertain of the future and terrified of the present, the pandemic consumer was all the more susceptible to peaceful and happy images from the past, which both algorithms and commercial entities gave him. In these circumstances, one can point to a specific management of pandemic nostalgia by entities that are essentially external to the individual user.

The main objective of this paper is to describe the logic of the conceptual approaches regarding the quality of life, and to identify the main dimensions and measurable indicators of quality of life. The identification of the main conceptualizations of quality of life is an essential step, in the context in which quality of life is often ambiguous or has multiple meanings. Although often used as an umbrella term which encompasses many aspects of human life, we aim to describe the logic of the integrative approaches regarding well-being/ quality of life. The identification of the main dimensions and measurable indicators of quality of life with a brief description of those, will serve to operationalize a list of life quality dimensions.

Ion Ungureanu (1990). Paradigme ale cunoașterii societății

This paper aims to review a fundamental book for any sociology student. In “The paradigms of Society knowledge” social scientist Ion Ungureanu organizes in an original manner the “theoretic core of sociology”: sociology’s main paradigms. He argues that sociology is a multi-paradigmatic science: it does not have an universal paradigm, but several paradigms which are competing for hegemony. The Romanian sociologist establishes the main fields of sociological studies: the constitution, organization, change and evolution of society. Although synthetic, the book is a vast one, and the review will be limited to the presentation of the links between some of the paradigms. Each paradigm has scientific potential, and from this point of view, Ion Ungureanu's work can open entire fields of research in Romanian sociology and beyond.

THE SNOWFLAKE GENERATION - THE IMPLICATIONS OF OVERDEVELOPED EGO ON SOCIAL REALITY

This material deals with the effects of the main traits of the Snowflake generation, namely, exacerbated ego (hypersensitivity), overdeveloped individualism (selfishness) and fear. This typology of young people born between 1980 and 2000, known as the "Me Generation" has been approximated in the past by Constantin Rădulescu Motru by the concept of "anarchic personality", which is the opposite of "energetic personality". To understand whether the young people of the "Me Generation" belong to one of the two categories, I will first make some theoretical clarifications.

Population Growth and GDP Per Capita Growth: Identifying the Causal Variable in 30 African Countries

Within a wider framework of institutional factors of economic growth and the relationship between population growth and GDP growth, this article focuses on the population growth and GDP growth per capita for 30 countries in Africa between 1960 and 2020. We provide a comparative analysis of approaches to methodology and results obtained in the impact of population growth on GDP/pc growth discourse. By performing the Bootstrapped PanelGranger Causality test, the estimation results show that half of the countries showed no causality and other half of countries showed different levels of significant causality. The most seen causality is the unidirectional causality from GDP growth per capita to population growth. In addition, unidirectional causality is observed from population growth to GDP growth per capita and bidirectional causality. Overall, the results add more evidence into the research of endogenous population growth theory, which implies that there is country-specific environment which determines the causality between these two variables.
