Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Endre fogságban és az ellenállás élén (1944)
The paper surveys the last nine months of the life of Endre Bajcsy-Zsilinszky (1886– 1944), a period which has been fixed in Hungarian historiography as the apogee of his career. Having examined his fight against the German occupation forces in close armed combat, the author goes on to present the long captivity of the politician on the basis of a hitherto unexploited group of sources, namely his letters which had been smuggled out of the prison. This source material reveals a much wider contact network that has hitherto been emphasised. After his liberation, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky officially also emerged as the leading figure of the Hungarian anti-Nazi opposition. Over these few weeks, one can follow almost on a daily basis the activities of the president of the Liberation Committee of the Hungarian National Rising, as well as the organisation of the Hungarian opposition movement. Finally, the circumstances of his discovery, the judicial procedure and the last days at Sopronkőhida are examined, with the help of a great number of memoirs, archival sources and the contemporary court registers.
