In the first article of its first issue Louis Milic wrote with uncommon clarity of vision that,The true nature of the machine is unknown to us, but it is neither a human brain nor a mechanical clerk. The computer has a logic of its own, one which the scholar must master if he is to benefit from his relations with it. Its intelligence and ours must be made complementary, not antagonistic or subservient to each other…. DIGITAL DOCUMENTARY EDITING OF ST PATRICK’S EPISTLES. LINKING THE MANUSCRIPT WITNESSES TO THE CANONICAL TEXT

St Patrick of Ireland, the fifth-century missionary and bishop, wrote two epistles which are commonly referred to as Confessio and Epistola ad milites Corotici. These two texts survive in seven medieval manuscript witnesses which were copied centuries after Patrick’s time. This article discusses digital transcriptions of these manuscript witnesses. The transcriptions were encoded using the encoding standard of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) following a documentary editing approach. The transcriptions will be the core of a new digital documentary edition. This edition is meant to be a research tool for the exploration of the medieval documents, but at the same time it is a mediator between the manuscript witnesses and existing text-critical editions and translations of the texts. This mediator function is achieved by including markers of lines and chapter of a canonical edition and links to an existing text-critical edition online. In the final section a few examples will briefly be look at that illustrate what kind of analysis will be possible and what visual presentations of the transcriptions will be incorporated in the new edition.

STRETCHING THE BOUNDARIES OF PUBLISHING: THE OPEN WEB PLATFORM AND THE ALTERNATIVES

Today’s scientific practice makes data the first territory for analysis and publishing becomes the rich context for cross referencing and interpretation. Scholarly publishing practices, editing and publishing in general have been shaped by the printing press and later on fashioned by the launch of the scientific journals starting in 1665 with the Philosophical Transactions by the Royal Society. Trends are mounting towards a self-publishing model, let that be under a known editorial label or in a self-sustained environment under university’s press umbrella or by the help of online free existing tools and services. All of the practices lend themselves to one purpose: being indexed, being parsed, mined for data, and emerging as valuable contributions to the field and become relevant. This paper explores some the new tool chains the Open Web Platform offers and some alternatives to be considered in the daily editing workflows. The envelope of the existing technologies is pushed further to step into the future world of deep learning and artificial intelligence. An exploratory tab will be set on the possibilities self-publishing is presenting the researchers in terms of tools and publishing platforms other than the regular channels.

MEDIA ARCHAEOLOGY OF INSTITUTIONAL ARCHIVES?

In his book entitled What is media archaeology Jussi Parikka suggests that it is possible to outline and develop a ‘hardcore’ media archaeology not only of the hard drive and software but their official use as a database, as information management systems as well. But is it possible at all to give a media archaeological account of the formal-institutional digital media practices, to provide a deep and material media archaeology of, say, a scholarly text archive as TextGrid or Deutsches Textarchiv? In my paper I try to check the ability of Parikka’s argument to answer these questions.

The use of digital tools in humanities research is on the rise, yeilding interesting results as the timelines are now able to take on new forms. The benefits are thus increased and this chronological representation complements the traditional and established method, especially when it comes to teaching a subject that contains such ample amounts of data.

EXIST DB OR SAXON/C IN PHP. A COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO APPROACHES FOR XSLT 2.0 BASED WEBSITES

XML and XSLT are very popular technologies among Digital Humanists. However, when it comes to deploying an XSLT 2.0 processor into a website infrastructure some difficulties arrise. This paper discusses two possible approaches for doing XSLT 2.0 transformations on the fly on a Web (Application) Server: Saxon as a PHP extension and Saxon within the popular XML database eXist. The conclusion shows, that both solutions have their pros and cons. In the end, however, the PHP solution wins.

Warszawa na ilustracjach w książkach dziecięcych i młodzieżowych – rekonesans

The article discusses representations of Warsaw in children’s and young adult book illustrations (including graphics appearing in picturebooks). The research material consists of the works from the collection of the Museum of Children’s Books (a special department of the Warsaw Public Library – Central Library of Mazovia Province) and those made available by the National Library of Poland on the https://polona.pl/ website. Firstly, the author discusses the images of the Polish capital city on the illustrations accompanying various versions of Warsaw legends and works which refer to these narratives. In the next part of the article, he examines book illustrations that do not refer to legends, looking for the so-called strong places in the space of Warsaw that are particularly popular among artists. Finally, in the conclusion, the issue of maps of the Polish capital appearing, among others, in picturebooks is discussed. The author concludes that children’s and young adult book illustrations presenting Warsaw can be seen as a kind of visual archive – a reservoir of memory about the real and legendary past of the city.

Două planuri ruseşti ale ansamblului Episcopiei Buzăului

In the present study, we continue the analysis of urban plans discovered at the Military-Historical Archive in Moscow, more precisely two plans of the Bishopric of Buzău. In the campaigns of 1771 and 1809-1810, the Russian officers showed interest in the “monastery” where the bishopric was based, because its walls could easily be used for defense in the event of attacks from the Turks. In this text we analyze the two plans, the context of their realization, details and comparison with other sources.

Urban Planning and Urban Lots in Cluj during The Modern Period. A Historical-Archaeological Perspective on the Emmanuel de Martonne, Hermann Oberth and Gaál Gábor Streets

Over the past two decades, the accelerated development of historical urban centers in Transylvania has determined an increase in archaeological rescue interventions. The phenomenon was also documented in Cluj‑Napoca. However, the legislative framework and the attitude of local decision‑makers remain deficient in protecting and capitalizing on the built historical heritage and archaeological remains in the urban area. The lack of complex research programs focusing on Transylvanian urban environments has also enabled widespread ignorance regarding the archaeological remains of the modern period. The development of the entire field of study of urban historical archaeology has thus been inhibited. This field of archaeology provides the theoretical framework and methodological background for the research carried out in the second part of 2021 on three of the secondary streets of the historical center of Cluj: Gaál Gábor St., Hermann Oberth St. and Emmanuel de Martonne St.The contextualization of the discoveries in the three streets adjacent to the famous Platea Luporum intra muros (Farkas utca, Mihail Kogălniceanu St.) has facilitated the analysis of urban planning efforts throughout the modern age, as well as their antecedents and origins. The research has highlighted different situations for each of the streets in question, regarding their period of origin, possible mutations, and connections with the associated urban lots. Emmanuel de Martonne St. is a late modern creation, planned and executed in two stages during the second half of the nineteenth century. Unlike it, Hermann Oberth St. is considerably earlier in date, possibly medieval, with a well‑defined and documented trajectory since the seventeenth century. Furthermore, Gaál Gábor St. was originally an obscure footpath that originated in the first half of the eighteenth century. It now has a partially altered trajectory due to urban systematization works dated to the beginning of the twentieth century. Their simultaneous research has allowed us to follow a long process of reconfiguration and multiplication of the street network in this micro‑area of historical Cluj.

Using smart people to build smarter:

Smart cities have been heralded as new powerhouses of economic growth and their capacity to fill this promise strongly depends on how attractive they are to highly skilled people. In fact, talented professionals can be regarded as their precondition and the fuel of innovation. In this article, we try to articulate how outstanding smart cities have managed to consolidate and retain a highly skilled graduate workforce. To this end, we analyse recent institutional developments in the cities with smart ambitions that achieve the highest smartness scores and compare them to parallel developments in those that obtain the lowest scores or no score across four countries: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Poland. Taking from theories of economics of agglomeration and urban economics, and following a careful review of the relevant literature, we first highlight reasons that draw highly skilled workers to a smart city before identifying the cities which have proven most able to capitalise on them. In line with existing theories, this article finds that cities which enjoy greater administrative autonomy tend to successfully use this leeway to implement pro-growth policies and amplify them via a regulatory setting that itself encourages business development. Hence, our conclusion provides recommendations towards a pathway of reforms for smart cities willing to authorise more comprehensive policies in order to boost their attractiveness as locations of employment and reach their stated objectives.

Амурская экспедиция и Комитет по заселению Дальнего Востока в планах Совета министров России при П.А.Столыпине

The defeat in the Russo-Japanese War forced the Russian authorities to change their strategy: instead of territorial expansion, the main task was to settle the Russian-speaking population in the Russian Far East and to ensure the border area security. For this purpose, large infrastructure projects were financed from the state budget during the interwar period. One of the most famous was the Amur railroad, the construction of which, as in the case with the Trans-Siberian Railway, significantly accelerated the colonization of the vast but sparsely populated territories of the Amur Region. In official publications and government discussions, the role of the road was associated not only with the achievement of military and strategic goals, but also with the economic development of Siberia and the Far East as a whole. At the same time, the establishment of a coordinating center for Far Eastern colonization became urgent in view of a large-scale attempt to solve the agrarian question in Central Russia. Participation of the members of the unified Government — the Council of Ministers — in the development of these measures implied taking into account all inter-agency interests. At the end of 1908, the Chairman of the Council of Ministers could only formulate general wishes on the organization of theoretical (scientific work) and practical (resettlement) aspects in the Far East. These proposals did not consider the specifics of lawmaking in the Duma monarchy. Attempts of the Main Administration for Land Management and Agriculture headed by A.V.Krivoshein to monopolize the subject of resettlement encountered sharp opposition from the most influential part of the government. The decision taken in 1909 to establish the Committee on the settlement of the Far East and to organize the Amur expedition was a compromise which was not predetermined by P.A.Stolypin’s original plans.

Преподавателската дейност на професор Петър Ст. Коледаров във Великотърновския университет „Св. св. Кирил и Методий“

This article examines the educational career of Professor Petar Stoyanov Koledarov (1922– 1992) at St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo. Prof. Koledarov was a notable twentieth- century historian and member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ Institute for Historical Studies. He laid the foundations of the Historical Geography and Cartography discipline in Bulgarian academia. In his work, he made significant contributions to its development as a field of science, and he actively promoted its inclusion in the curriculum of Bulgaria’s higher education institutions. Between 1967 and 1983, he was also a lecturer in this field at the university. The article traces his path to becoming an educator, outlines the peculiarities of his teaching methods, and delves into the content of his lectures. It also briefly examines his contribution to the development of the city of Veliko Tarnovo during that period.
